SECTION A (COMPULSORY)

Question one

( a ) (i) Demonstrate how you can get the absolute error, using an example of
your choice ( 2 mks)

(ii) Get the absolute and relative errors of the following measurements:
                365 cm, 7.65 cm, 34.7 cm, 0.76 m 1009 cm. (5 mks )
(iii) Show that the relative error of a product is equal to the sum of relative
errors of individual figures making it up. ( 3 mks)
(b) (i) A business man buys three bananas at a certain price. He sold the
bananas, making a total profit of three shillings. If the total selling
price was kshs 18, get the buying price for each banana ( 5 mks)

(ii) Use the graphical method to solve for x in:

2x^2+x-10=0 ( 5 mks)

( c ) Find the lower and upper limits of the perimeter of a regular pentagon
whose side measures 15.0 cm. ( 5 mks)

(i) Solve for x in:

2 x+3= 11 ( 2 mks)

( ii ) For each of the equations above, draw a graph representing them and
proof the solutions for x gotten thereof, by use of the graphs ( 7 mks)

from their homes to Maasai Mara University. Use it to answer the questions
that follow.

(ii ) Come up with a comprehensive frequency distribution table, including;


the mid-points, class boundaries and cumulative frequencies. ( 5 mks)

curve, the bar graph and the histogram ( 9 mks )

(a) (i) Round off the following figures to the nearest whole numbers

                    2098.896, 769.o64, 783.687, 23.09, 0.078, 0.5689 (3 mks)

(ii) Truncate the figures above to 2 s.f. (3 mks)

( b) A Pipe measuring 9.05 m was cut into two pieces. The first one was
found to be 5.6 m. Calculate the maximum and minimum possible
length of the second piece ( 4 mks)

(c) Calculate the maximum and minimum possible areas of a parallelogram


whose base measures 10.08 cm and height measures 5.4 cm ( 5 mks)

Question six

(a) A circular tank measures 2.4 m in radius and 5.7 m in height. Calculate
its volume in liters. Give your answer in two significant figures.

(b) Give five applications of measures, relevant to your area of
specialization ( 5 mks )
(c) Describe and hence give the difference between the range and
inter-             quartile range (2

(d) Convert the following measurements into meters:
