_____________
(WRITE YOUR
SPECIALIZATION)

Would you like to become an entrepreneur, to start and operate a small

business of your own? Perhaps you may wonder whether such dream can come true.
The good news is that thousands of individuals start their businesses every year. You
are living in a world of ENTREPRENEURIAL OPPORTUNITIES.

Entrepreneurial opportunities exist for those who can produce products and
services desired by customers. A promising entrepreneurial is more than just an
interesting idea. It involves a product or service that is so attractive to customers that
they are willing to pay their hard-earned money for it. In other words, an entrepreneur
must find ways to create value for customers.

Our working definition of Entrepreneurial Opportunities for this module is, “a

desirable and timely innovation that creates value for interested buyers and end-users,

distinguishes between opportunities and ideas. It is important to note, however, that
a given opportunity will not be equally attractive to everyone. Because of differences
and perspectives, one person may see an opportunity while others may not. But, in
any case, a true opportunity exists only for the entrepreneur who has the interest,
resources, and capabilities required to succeed.

LETS STUDY THIS!

GETTING STARTED: Age and Entrepreneurial Opportunity

Starting any type of business career is exciting. Launching one’s own business,
however, can be absolutely breathtaking because of the extreme risk and great
potential in such a venture.

One practical question is, “What is the right age to become an entrepreneur?”
As you might guess, there is no simple answer to this question. Most businesses
require some background knowledge.

In addition, most prospective entrepreneurs must first build their financial

resources to make the necessary initial investment. A certain amount of time is usually
required to gain education, experience and financial resources.

The ideal time for entrepreneurship, then, appears to lie somewhere the mid-
20s and the mid-30s, when there is balance between preparatory experiences on one
hand and family obligations on the other hand.

Research conducted by Paul Reynolds shows that the highest percentage of

startups is in 25 to 35 – year age group. Obviously, there are exceptions to this
generation: some teenagers start their own firms, and some 50 to 60 –year-old walk
away from successful careers in big business when they become excited by the
prospects of entrepreneurship.

Let’s move forward!

Knowing that you are living in a world of entrepreneurial opportunities, you
have to understand that succeeding in entrepreneurial venture does have
limits. Here are other things that you need to know about entrepreneurship.

Personal Traits and Characteristics of Entrepreneurs

LET’S TRY THIS!

Entrepreneurial Opportunities are limitless, but it does not mean that an

entrepreneurial venture will always succeed. In the activity below, you will
identify some reasons why entrepreneurial opportunities succeed or fail.

7
SUCCESSES FAILURES

ENTREPRENEURIAL OPPORTUNITIES

KEEP THIS IN MIND

Think about this!

“Without an opportunity, there is no entrepreneurship.” It does not matter how
creative, capable and willing an individual is. If there is no possible opportunity
to exploit, then there is no way that entrepreneurship can emerge.

8
CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS

What kind of people become successful entrepreneurs? It is not surprising that

no well-defined entrepreneurial profile exists. Individual entrepreneurs differ from each
other. This should give you encouragement if you wish to start your own business; you
do not need to fit some prescribed stereotype.

One of the characteristics is a strong commitment or passion for the business.

It is an attitude that results in tenacity in the face of difficulty and willingness to work
hard. Entrepreneurs do not give up easily. Such individuals are typically confident
of their ability to meet the challenges confronting them. This factor of self-confidence
was described by Psychologist J.B. Rotter as an internal locus of control – a feeling
that success depends on one’s efforts. In contrast, an external locus control reflects
an attitude of dependence on luck or fate for success.

Timmons and Spinelli summarized research on entrepreneurial characteristics.

They grouped what they described as “desirable and acquirable attitudes and
behavior” into the following categories:

COMMITMENT AND DETERMINATION – such entrepreneurs are tenacious,

decisive, and persistent in problem solving.

LEADERSHIP – such entrepreneurs are self-starters and team builders and

focus on honesty in their business relationship.

OPPORTUNITY OBSESSION – such entrepreneurs are aware of market and

customer needs.

TOLERANCE OF RISK, AMBIGUITY AND UNCERTAINTY – such

entrepreneurs are risk-takers, risk-minimizer and uncertainty tolerators.

CREATIVITY, SELF-RELIANCE AND ADAPTABILITY – such entrepreneurs

are open minded, flexible, uncomfortable with status quo and quick learners.

MOTIVATION TO EXCEL – such entrepreneurs are goal oriented and aware

of their weaknesses and strengths

Take note of this!

In starting an entrepreneurial venture, there comes a point to which the
entrepreneur must “take a plunge.” It may be scary because of the risk,
but entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. ☺

LET’S EXPLORE!

Task 4. Read the story and answer the questions that follow.

LIVING THE DREAM: A Teenage Entrepreneur

Even teenagers can become an entrepreneur! There are no hard-and-fast rules that
forbid teenagers, or even 90 years old, for that matter, from starting businesses of
their own. Anyone can dream the dreams of entrepreneurship at any age!

One California teenager started a business for computer maintenance, upgrades

and internet design.

While most of his 14-yearl-old friends were worrying about the video games and
girls, Jay Betancourt was thinking about his future. Betancourt decided to start a
business that would not only earn him spending money but also help improve his
computer skills. After completing copious amount of paper and paying several
licensing fees required by California state law, he opened Betancourt Industries,
which he ran until his family moved to Bruceville-Eddy, Texas.

By the time he left California, Betancourt has five employees and long list of clients.
In his new Texas location, the 17-year-old quickly relaunched the business and
hired two friends who were in his high school business class. These young
technicians help customers with installation, repair, maintenance, upgrading and
general computer services. Even though they are not old enough to vote, they are
becoming a productive unit in their local business community.
