Answers - Algebra 1 Course – Unit 2, Worksheet 13, Adding and Subtracting Like
Terms, Part 1

Simplify.

Problem 1) 5𝑥 + 3𝑥

The terms are like terms because they have the same variable. Combine the
coefficients:

5𝑥 + 3𝑥 = (5 + 3)𝑥

= 8𝑥

Answer: 8𝑥

Problem 2) 3𝑥 − 𝑦 + 10𝑥

The terms are like terms if they have the same variable. Combine the coefficients
in the like terms:

3𝑥 + 10𝑥 − 𝑦

= (3 + 10)𝑥 − 𝑦

= 13𝑥 − 𝑦

Answer: 13𝑥 − 𝑦

Problem 3) −𝑎 + 2𝑏 − 2𝑎 − 𝑏

The terms are like terms if they have the same variable. Combine the coefficients
in the like terms:

−𝑎 + 2𝑏 − 2𝑎 − 𝑏

= −𝑎 − 2𝑎 + 2𝑏 − 𝑏

= (−1 − 2)𝑎 + (2 − 1)𝑏

= −3𝑎 + 𝑏

Answer: −3𝑎 + 𝑏 or 𝑏 − 3𝑎

Problem 4) −5𝑦 − (−2𝑦)

The terms are like terms because they have the same variable. Combine the
coefficients:

−5𝑦 − (−2𝑦)

= −5𝑦 + 2𝑦

= (−5 + 2)𝑦

= −3𝑦

Answer: −3𝑦

Problem 5) 𝑥 − 3𝑥 − (−4𝑥) + 𝑦 − 3𝑦

The terms are like terms if they have the same variable. Combine the coefficients
in the like terms:

𝑥 − 3𝑥 − (−4𝑥) + 𝑦 − 3𝑦

= 𝑥 − 3𝑥 + 4𝑥 + 𝑦 − 3𝑦

= (1 − 3 + 4)𝑥 + (1 − 3)𝑦

= 2𝑥 − 2𝑦

Answer: 2𝑥 − 2𝑦

Problem 6) 2𝑥 + 2𝑥 − 3𝑥 − 7𝑦

The terms are like terms if they have the same variable. Combine the coefficients
in the like terms:

2𝑥 + 2𝑥 − 3𝑥 − 7𝑦

= (2 + 2 − 3)𝑥 − 7𝑦

= 𝑥 − 7𝑦

Answer: 𝑥 − 7𝑦

Problem 7) 𝑦 + 2𝑥 − 4𝑥 − (−6𝑥) − 5𝑦

The terms are like terms if they have the same variable. Combine the coefficients
in the like terms:

𝑦 + 2𝑥 − 4𝑥 − (−6𝑥) − 5𝑦

= 𝑦 + 2𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 6𝑥 − 5𝑦

= 𝑦 − 5𝑦 + 2𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 6𝑥

= (1 − 5)𝑦 + (2 − 4 + 6)𝑥

= −4𝑦 + 4𝑥

Answer: −4𝑦 + 4𝑥 or 4𝑥 − 4𝑦

Problem 8) −5𝑦 + 2𝑥 − 𝑦 + 3𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 2𝑦

The terms are like terms if they have the same variable. Combine the coefficients
in the like terms:

−5𝑦 + 2𝑥 − 𝑦 + 3𝑥 − 4𝑥 + 2𝑦

= −5𝑦 − 𝑦 + 2𝑦 + 2𝑥 + 3𝑥 − 4𝑥

= (−5 − 1 + 2)𝑦 + (2 + 3 − 4)𝑥

= −4𝑦 + 𝑥

Answer: −4𝑦 + 𝑥 or 𝑥 − 4𝑦
