CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AS YOUR FUTURE

Chemical engineering being an applied science is one of the toughest engineering courses in the world.
In fact, only few students have the guts to take this engineering course. Just line in the Philippines, there
are more or less 20 colleges or universities who offer chemical engineering course. Also, there are less
than 1000 chemical engineers being added annually in the roster of chemical engineers in the
Philippines. Though one of the hardest fields in Engineering and sciences, there's a variety of jobs and
industries into which a chemical engineer can apply his expertise.

Chemical engineering is described as an applied chemistry into which raw materials are being converted
into useful products. It incorporates the principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology,
economics and other allied engineering subjects in order to solve technical problems in industries. It is
also a branch of engineering cobncered in the design, construction and opertion of machines into which
chemical reaction takes place in making useful products. The principles of chemical thermodynamics,
transport phenomena, reaction kinetics and unit operations make a chemical engineer unique with other
types of engineers. Also, biological principles and environmental engineering are being included in the
chemical engineering field.

>> The versatility and being broad in scientific and technical mastery makes a chemical engineer a
universal engineer

The versatility and being broad in scientific and technical mastery makes a chemical engineer a
Univeersal Engineer. In fact, there are lots of employment ways for fresh chemical engineers to choose
with. Careers in energy, water, food, pertroleum and pharmaceutical sectors are some of the
commonplaces. Also, being an expert in the field of engineering economics, project management and
understanding process controls and flows, also makes them, wanted in the fields beyond engineering
world such as the finance sector. Usually a fresh chemical engineer starts their career as a junior process
engineer in certain fields such as petroleum, coatings and energy. Also, some of them find their careers
as pollution control officers in industries such as metallurgical and mining activities.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERS AS...

1. Process Engineers

The knowledge of chemical engineers in material conversion allows them to be employed as process
engineers in indutries. Being a process engineer, a chemical engineer has to develop functioning,
economic and environmentally accepted processes to convert materials into useful products. Also, they
deal with biological, chemica; and physical processes through innovation and improvement of existing
processes in industries. They also have the function of designing plants for the control and optimization
of processes, in the oil and petroleum industries, a process engineer has the responsibility to supervise
refineries for more improved and developed production.

2. Research and Development Engineers

It has always been a challenge for chemical engineers to improve or renovate existing processes in the
industries for better production. Being an expert in chemistry and materials engineering, a chemical
engineer who seeks a field in rthe RnD field has the task to develop and formulate new ideas and
processes for the improvement of products being produced in industries as well as to identify solutions
to potential problems arising in the market place. Also, he has to develop ideas improving efficiency in
the production without posing a threat to the environment. Some RnD engineers have the task to
research, develop, formulate and improve methods reducing the emission of pollutants for
environmental protection and compliance with environmental standards. There are some who do
researched aligned with microbiology, nantechnology, and biochemistry.

3. Operations Engineers

As operations engineers, a chemical engineer is entitled to ensure the manufacturing systems are
satisfactory, tolerable, and functional and conform to industrial practices and senior management's
specifications. It has been the task of an operations engineer to check and ensure that the plant is
producing the right amount of products meeting the proper specifications. They are also responsible to
provide maintenance and troubleshooting assistance in the manufacturing processes; improved product
quality and investigates problems in the production; improved system efficiency and train operating staff.

4. Design Engineers

The knowledge in the design of equipment, reactors, and industrial plants makes a chemical engineer a
design engineer. Design engineers create blueprints and schematics for systems, machines, chemical
reactors and equipment. They are the ones who determine the process flow as well as the different
factors to be considered in constructing equipment for manufacturing of materials. Through to be
acquired information in chemical kinetics, reactor design and unit operations, they are the pnes who
determine the proper type of equipment to be used in a certain process as well as the size of the reactor
and the materials of construction. They can also create a design for a specific industrial plant.

5. Safety Engineers

Chemical engineers being knowledgeable in industrial safety management make them qualified as safety
engineers. Safety engineers are entitled to inspect, investigate and control the risk or hazards that may
arise in the workplace and also with the harm that cna be brought by the manufacturing and production.
They find solutions for safety problems in industries, as well to train safety staffs.

6. Sale and Marketing Engineers

Sales and marketing engineers are entitled for technical sales management. They are responsible for
managing technology evaluation stage of the sales process. They also provide new ways of producing
existing products; identify all technical issues for customer satisfaction in the sales process, convey
teachnology and product setting to both business and technical users/

7. Quality Analysis

Quality Analysts are the one who check and ensures the quality of useful products. They are the ones
who provide reports and maintain the quality of products meeting the correct specifications.

8. Environmental Engineers

Chemical engineers being the one responsible in producing useful things also have the responsibility to
take action in the continuing environmental pollution. Different sources of pollution arise in the different
industries worldwide especially in the developing countries. Environmental engineers have the task to
find solutions to reduce the risk of environmental pollution from industrial productions. They are
responsible to monitor the emissions being generated by industrial plants whether they comply with
environmental standards.

9. Academe

As provided in the codes and ethics for the practice of chemical engineering, chemical engineers shall
strive to continue their professional development throughout their career by participating in continuing
education. Being an academe, they provide knowledge and information on chemical engineering
principles to chemical engineering students. They are the ones who build the students' foundation in
understanding chemical engineering principles for future application in industries. They create successful
chemical engineers,
