Problem #1:
Rhea has 5 vases of flowers. Each vase has three flowers. How many flowers
are there in all?

To be able to solve this problem, we need to add three flowers five times.
So, 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15 flowers in all. This process is called repeated addition.
However, we can use multiplication to solve the problem in a practical
way.
5 vases x 3 flowers = 15 flowers or simply 5 x 3 = 15
Factors product

Historically, multiplication was developed to replace

addition of similar numbers. For this reason, we
usually see multiplication explained and defined as
repeated addition.

Example: Mark Anthony has 5 packets of cards. Each packet has 153 cards.
How many cards does he have in all?
Solution:
Multiply 5 ones Multiply 3 tens Multiply 1 hundred by
by 3, Regroup. by 3. Add the 3. Add the regrouped
regrouped ten. hundred.

1 21 21
153 153 153
X 5 X 5 X 5
5 65 765

3.) 6 x 45
= 270 candies all in all
5.) 8 dozen = 96 pieces
96 x 18 = ₱1,728
96 x 20 = ₱1,920
1,920 – 1,728 = ₱192 can be save in buying 8 dozen notebook.

“Mind Strainers” p. 150

1. 910 x 5
= ₱4,551.75

2. 1,684.18 x 4
=₱6,736.72

3. 25.35 x 6 = 152.1 grams

12.9 x 12 = 154.8 grams
152.1 + 154.8 = 306.9 grams
