1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Expos-AID Automatic Exposure Control (AEC) is an

important accessory for the
greatly simpli es
eld ofmammography.
the use of x-ray generators by
It
automatically controlling the exposure required for every
radiograph, compensating for variations in parameters such
as:
Patient anatomy and size
Source-to-image distance (SID)
kVp-dependent response of screen- lm combinations
The operator is required only to select a reasonable kVp for
the anatomy involved and position the solid state detector
in line with the anatomy of principle interest. The Expos-
AID AEC does the rest, automatically determining the
exposure time for the precise mi1liampere-seconds (mAS)
required to give excellent diagnostic radiographs. The
results are:
Reduction in number of x-ray retakes, along with their
cost and inconvenience.
Reduction in patient and operator radiation required to
produce good lms.
Films that are not only consistently diagnostic, but
that are uniformly exposed by all operators on all
shifts and on all AEC equipped generators.

Some of the detailed features of the Expos-AID AEC are:

Post-exposure display of the milliampere-seconds (mAs)
used, to provide a correlation with manual techniques.
Push button selection of either of two screen- lm
combinations chosen for calibration into the system at
the time of installation.
Switch adjustment for lm. optical Density variations to
suit individual preferences of darker or lighter lms.
Push button selection of either grid or no grid
operation.
-- Exposure termination indicators to assure the operator
O15 of the proper functioning of the ARc.

circuitry. IỈ theon iight is not lit, all functions
of the AEC circuitry are disconnected and the X-ray
generator may be operated manually. The green AEC
light on the same button comes on each time the AEC
terminates an exposure.
Screen Selection
Selects Screen #1 or Screen #2. These numbers simply
refer to two screen- lm combinations that have been
calibrated into the system at the user's reguest at the
time of installation.
Grid Selection
Provides the proper compensation in density for use
either without a grid (No) or with a grid (Yes).
Density Control
No lights on - normal density setting
+ or ++ Increase of density (darker) by approximately
25% or 50% of the mÀs exposure at the normal density
setting.
- Orz Reduction of density (lighter) by
approximately 25* or 50% of the mÀS exposure at the
normal density setting.
This is routinely set at Normal (no lights on) where
the system was calibrated for proper lm density.
Plus or minus settings are used when special
circumstances require darker or lighter than normal
lms.

Exposure Termination Indicators
AEC - Correct exposure termination hen using the
Expos-AID AEC.

GEN - Exposure termination by the x-ray generator. The

exposure reached the mAs limit set on the x-ray
generator. The operator should set this to at least
twice the mAs expected, as a back-up to the AEC.

mAS - Exposure ternination by the Expos-AID AEC after

a maximum of 320 mAS has been accumulated. In this
unlikely event, no further exposures should be
attempted unti1 the cause of the default termination is
determined and corrected.

i Reset

Required to permit another radiograph only if an

exposure has not been properly terminated and indicated
on the panel ("AEC"). If an exposure has been
terminated by the backup generator setting ("GEN"), or
if themaximumallowable exposure has been sensed
("'mAs" ), the Reset button must be pressed to allow
additional exposures. The need to press the RESET
button should be interpreted by the operator as a
potential radiation safety warning.
2.2 AEC-Terninated Exposure
When the green AEC light comes on after an exposure, then
the exposure has been terminated correctly by the AEC. The
actual mAS for the exposure is shown on the digital display.
2.3 Generator-Terminated Exposure
If the red "GEN" light comes on after making an exposure,
then the exposure has been terminated by the x-ray
generator--not the AEC--and either the generator back-up
time (mAS) is too short or the detector is not in position
in the X-ray beam. Determine and correct the cause of the
improper exposure ternination; then press the "Reset" button
to permit another exposure.
2.4 Default-Terminated Exposure

If the red "mAs" light comes on after making an exposure,

the exposure was terminated by the 320 mAS default limit in
the Expos-AID AEC. This unlikely event indicates the
possibilityof a service problem with either the x-ray
generator or the Expos-AID AEC. No further exposures should
be attempted until the cause of the default termination is
determined and corrected.

2.5 Routine Care and Maintenance
The Expos-AID AEc must be calibrated to match the particular
screen- lm combination (s) being used. If the screen- lm
combination is changed, then the system must be
recalibrated (see Section 5.0 for instructions).
or The detector may be cleaned using a damp sponge and a mild
detergent.
o Do inspect the detector cable periodically for evidence of
damage (e.g. sharp bends, cha ng)
Do not attempt to open the detector; it is not eld
serviceable. The manufacturer cannot be responsible for
units that show evidence of tampering.

5.0 CALIBRATION INSTRUCTIONS

It is not necessary to open the electronics assembly for

calibration. Al] test points and potentiometers are labeled
and accessible through the cover.
The purpose of the calibration procedure in this chapter is
to match the Expos-AID AEC to the user's particular
generator and to the X-ray absorption characteristics of the
speci c screen- lm and grid combinations to be used with
that generator.
The kVp Level Adjustment (Section 5.1) matches the Expos-AID
AEC kVp measuring circuitry to the generator's kVp range.
The Calibration/Test Set Up (section 5.2) shows the proper
positioning of the x-ray tube arm, AEC detector, lm
cassette and phantom.
The Gain Adjustment and Grid Gain Adjustment
(Sections 5.3 and 5.4) match the Expos-AID AEC to the
screen- lm and grid combinations.
The kVp Compensation Adjustnents (Section 5.5) then
completes the matching of the Expos-AID AEC to the screen-
lm combinations by ne tuning four additional calibration
set points on the kVp compensation curve. The ne tuning
is accomplished by making an x-ray exposure, measuring the
resultant Optical Density of the lm, adjusting (if
necessary) each calibration set point according to a simple
formula, and then rechecking with another exposure.
Equipment Required
X-ray Apparatus
X-ray generator, known to be in good working order.

X-ray lm processor.
X-ray densitometer capable of measuring lm Optical
Density from 0.5 to 2.5 with accuracy of + 0.05 OD.
Fully installed Expos-AID AEC including a push button
display/ assembly, electronics assembly, and AEC
detector.
Film, Cassettes and Grids - use the same combinations
for calibration that will be used for work with
patients. Designate one combination as Screen 1 and
another as Screen 2. If only one combination is to be
used, then make the same calibration adjustments for
both screen positions 1 and 2, or move 61036 W4 to the
storage (b/c) position to disable screen switching.

5.1 kVp Level Adjustment
This procedure sets the actuation levels of the kVp
compensation path comparators.
Turn on the generator and the Expos-AID AEC.

Set the generator for 30kVp

Turn on 61046 Sw1. 61046 Sw2, Sw3 and Sw4 should be off.

Adjust 61046 R12 (kVp Level Adjustment) so that kVp level

indicator 61046 L3 just goes off and 61046 L4 just comes on.

Adjust the generator kVp selector up and đown throughout the

usable AEC range (24kVp to 36kVp) and record the kVp
settings at which the kVp Level Indicators (61046 L2 - L5)
turn on. These will be the kVp compensation set points
which will be used in Section 5.5 Table 5.1.

5.2 Calibration/Test Set Up (See Figure 5.2)

1. Position the X-ray tube head for 23.5 inches (60cm) SID.
2. In considering the location of the x-ray tube arn,
provide a safe distance between the x-ray tube and any
personnel for safety from radiation scatter.
3. Turn on the X-ray generator. Collimate for the lm
size being used in the calibration. Make sure the AEC
detector is entirely within the x-ray beam.
4. Center the phantom over the ABC detector.
5. Set the x-ray generator mAs selector for 200MAS for all
AEC exposures so that the generator will not interfere
with AEC operation.
Cassettes
It is important that one speci c x-ray cassette be used
throughout the entire calibration procedure for a particular
screen- lm combination. Minor differences from cassette to
cassette can cause readings that appear to be erratic and
unnecessarily complicate the procedure. The same is true of
grids.

in Section 5.3 (Gain Adjustment).
5.6 Screen2 a o
Select Screen 2 on the Expos-AID AEC push button assembly.
Repeat the steps outlined in Sections 5.3, 5.4 and 5.5 for
the second screen- lm combination to be used.
In Section 5.3 step 9 adjust 61039 R7 instead of 61039 R3.

In Section 5.4 adjust 61039 R9 instead of 61039, R5.

In Section 5.5 adjust 61047 R6, R7, R9 and R10 instead of

61047 R1, R2, R4 and R5 respectively.

If a second screen- lm combination is not utilized, set the

Screen 2 gain, 61039 R7, and the Screen 2 grid gain, 61039
R9, to produce the same mAs readings obtained for Screen 1
in Sections 5.3 and 5.4. Then match the CRV settings for
Screen 2 (61047 R6, R7, R9 and R10) with those obtained for
Screen 1 in Section 5.5. Sneytd

Note: Screen 2 must be selected in order to register the

CRV at 61039 TP4 for each kVp setting.

Alternatively, if a second screen- lm combination is not

used, move jumper 61036 W4 to storage (b/c) position to
disable the screen selection switch.

5.7 Conclusion of calibration eSseo aToS
It is strongly suggested that a diagnostic quality
anatomical or radiological phantom be used to provide an
initial baseline quality check of the system.
It isrecommendedthat the Expos-AIDAEC "Normal"
calibration be left at 1.20 OD so that radiographs using the
various x-ray generators equipped with Expos-AIDAEC are all
directly comparable
within a department and even from one
hospital to another. The Density Control switches are
provided for users who may desire an Optical Density other
than the normal 1.20 OD.

Though not arecommendedprocedure, if the users prefer that

their "Normal1" be other than the 1.20 Optical Density
provided by the calibration procedure, the input ampli er
gains (61039 R3 and R7 for no grid and R5 and R9 for
grid) can be adjusted accordingly. It is notnecessaryto
reset the CRVS.
Os TheExpos-AIDAutomaticExposureControlsystem is nowerec
eay adjusted and calibrated.
Be sure to complete an FDAAssembler's Report for this
installation. t

6.0 PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

The following sections are intended to provide service

personnel with a basic understanding of the key elements of
the Expos-AID AEC system.

6.1 Basic System Blocks (Refer to Figures 6.1 and 6.2)

X-ray sourcelwbouutapaoo3hthhec K t Aaol
Patient anatomy
Screen- lm cassette
Solid-state detector oa
The x-rays produce a small current which is time
integrated on PCB 61048 and transmitted to the input
ampli er on PCB 61039.

Gain Switching circuitry- Remotely activated at the

push button assembly to select the use of Screen 1 or
Screen 2 gain, corresponding to screen- lm combination
1 or 2. Selection of gain adjustments for Grid "Yes"
and Grid "No operation are also accommodated.
Screen- lm absorption matching circuitry - Five kVp
calibration set point adjustment potentiometers
corresponding to 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36kVp are used to
establish a kVp dependent response curve which matches
that of the screen- lm combination. The kVp signal is
processed and the interpolation and extrapolation
circuits select a Compensation Voltage (CV) from this
curve.
0436 toSLOraC
The density control can be used to raise or lower the
CV by up to 50% to provide a Compensation Reference
Voltage (CRV) to the comparator circuit.
The anticipate circuit modi es the CRV at the
start of an exposure to terminate short x-ray exposures
prior to normal extinction to compensate for inherent
turnoff delays in the generator.
The comparator controls and precisely terminates the
exposure when the detector signal eguals the CRV.
The mA Signal - a DC signal proportional to the x-ray
tube current is routed to a voltage-to-frequency
converter for the post-exposure mAs Display.

6.2 Diagnostic/Troubleshooting Guideza3 h LA
The following is a list of possible problems and their
likely corrections. The list is notcomprehensive.
Additional questions should be referred to the factory or
service center. It isassumedthat the x-ray generator is
in proper working order, and this should be con rmed by
normal manual operation of the generator after simply
switching off the Expos-AID AEC.7p 022 ah n 2T
Preliminary Checks
Check to see that the x-ray generator operates properly with
the Expos-AID AEC power turned off.)
Check the x-ray generatormAs, selector to see that it is set
for 20OMAS so that the generator will not interfere with AEc
operation. 3 Ooj
Check all interface wiring as described in Section 4.0
Check to see that all cable connectors are securely fastened
and held in place with the appropriate hardware.
Check to see that all cables are routed and secured to avoid
sharpedges.andmovingparts. )
Check all cables for physical damage.
Check all circuit boards to see that they are correctly
plugged into their proper connectors.
os Check to see that all fuses are good.
Check the Test Mode Switches, 61046 SW2-SW4, to see that
they are all turned off. 61046 SW1 may be left on in order
to keep the kVp level indicators, 61046 L1-L5, turned on.
Check the programmable jumpers to see that they are in their
proper locations as listed in Section 7.4.
