PE4063/6463, Well Completion – Dr. Evren OZBAYOGLU Chapter 3

5
Connections PE

• Thread compound within the threads provides

the seal
• During makeup, the casing is tightened to the
base of the triangle
• There are no recommended makeup torques for
a buttress thread
• Buttress threads are used in geothermal or
steam injection wells because they are stronger
in compression than 8 round threads

PE4063/6463, Well Completion – Dr. Evren OZBAYOGLU Chapter 3

Connections PE

• Since 8rd and buttress threads do not

seal, some operators will not use them in
high pressure wells
• Buttress threads will leak easier than
round threads
• Some operators place a maximum
pressure limit of 5000 psi (34,470 kPa)
on API 8rd or buttress threads

PE4063/6463, Well Completion – Dr. Evren OZBAYOGLU Chapter 3

6
Connections PE

• Extreme line is an integral joint

• It does not have a coupling
• The ends are manufactured with an upset
and the pin is cut into one upset while the
box is cut into the other end
• Extreme line was designed for reduced
hole clearances so it is a weaker joint

Example PE

• 133/8 in intermediate string is to be set at 7,500

ft. Mud equivalent of pore pressure is given as
8.8 ppg. Mud weight while landing 133/8 casing is
equal to 9.0 ppg. Fracture pressure at 7,500 ft
is 14.0 ppg. Next casing setting depth is planned
to be at 16,000 ft, where mud weight will be
11.0 ppg. Consider a gas specific gravity of 0.65.
Determine collapse and burst lines for 133/8 in
casing string.
