relatives remembered him
fondly in a discussion and
doa mahfil held at his
residence, said Zia’s brother
Makid Hyder.
Prof Hyder passed away
on September 2, 2008, after
having a cardiac arrest.
He is the founder of the
Chittagong University’s
drama department. He
also has remarkable
contributions to the
neo-theatre movement
in Bangladesh, which
commenced shortly after
the country’s independence.
He is known for his
books on theatre. Most
of his books are referred
to as texts at the theatre
departments in many
public universities
around the country as
well as Rabindra Bharati
University in India.
Family members and
fellows of Prof Hyder formed
a trust in his name, which
is currently conducting
various philanthropic
activities in Pabna.

night’s three-hour cultural show “Epic
Chapter 4” by more than five hours at Rajshahi
Student-teacher Cultural Centre.
Surprisingly, the audience bore with the extra
hours at the non-air-conditioned auditorium.
“Recreational facilities are scarce in the
campus. That’s why students are cooperating
with the organisers,” one of the audiences said
in the low-lit theatre.
Epic, a theatre body of students of RU’s
English department, organised the show.
Business organisations Tilottoma, Address, Light
Arts, Durdanta, and EduXpert were supporting
the organisers. Epic has been inspiring students
to engage in creative activities since 2017, with
the motto, “art is liberty”.
The organisers said all of their tickets at the
400-people capacity auditorium were sold out,
and they had to sell many standing tickets. Many
students had to be returned as tickets were sold
out. The main attraction of the event was a play
by William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s
Dream.
