FINALS ACTIVITY NO. 1
PROBABILITY

I. Directions: Solve the following problems: (5 points each)

1. What are your chances of winning a raffle in which 325 tickets have been sold, if you have one
ticket?

2. Three tulip bulbs are planted in a window box. Find the probability that at least one will flower if
the probability that all will fail to flower is 1.

3. A number is selected at random from the integers 2 to 25. Find the probability that it is:

a. a perfect square;
4/24 or 1/6

b. a prime number;
9/24 or 3/8

c. a perfect square or prime number.

4. Given the table:

Gender Doctors Nurses Total
Female 90 90 180
Male 100 20 120
Total 190 110 300
Find the conditional probability of the following:
a. P(female | nurse);

FINALS ACTIVITY NO. 2
Z-TEST

I. Directions: Solve the following problems: (5 points each)

1. Records show that the performance of male college students in Mathematics in terms of final
grade is 5% higher than in female college students with corresponding standard deviations of
4.35% and 3.97%, respectively. A mathematics instructor verifies this information by having the
final grades. There are 80 students, consisting of 44 females and 36 males. The following
statistics are shown:

Sex Average Final Grade

Male 93.45%
Female 87.42%

Can the mathematics instructor say that the difference between the average final grades obtained
by the males and females is higher than 5%? Use 5% level of significance.

Solution:
1. State the null and the alternative hypotheses of the given problem.
𝝁𝒐: 𝝁𝟏 = 𝝁𝟐
𝝁𝒂: 𝝁𝟏 > 𝝁𝟐

2. Determine the level of significance and the direction of test.

𝜶 = 0.05
Direction of test: one-tailed test

3. Test Statistics:

Z-Test for Two Samples

4. Compute for the test statistic and compare with the critical
value. Given
𝒙̅𝟏 = 93.45%
𝒙̅𝟐 = 87.42%
𝜽𝟏= 4.35%
𝜽𝟐= 3.97%
𝒏𝟏= 36
𝒏𝟐= 44
𝜶 = 0.0

𝒙̅𝟏−𝒙̅2 = = 6.41406878158

z C =¿ 𝟐 (𝟑.𝟗𝟕)𝟐

𝜽 𝜽𝟐
𝟐 √(𝟒.𝟑𝟓)
𝟑𝟔 + 𝟒𝟒
√ 𝟏𝒏 + 𝒏𝟐
𝟏

𝒁𝒂= 𝒁𝟎.𝟎𝟓= 1.64

We have 𝒁𝒄 > 𝒁𝒂
5. State the decision based on the resulting computed value when compared to the
critical value.

Since we have 𝒁𝒄 > 𝒁𝒂, that is 6.414 > 1.64, then we reject 𝑯𝒐.

6. Write the conclusion for the given problem.

Therefore, we can say that the difference between the average final grades that
was obtained by the males and females is higher than 5%.
