Miguel María Grau Seminario He was a Peruvian military and political sailor, and
posthumous Grand Admiral of the Peruvian Navy. During the Pacific War, he
commanded the Huáscar monitor and held off the Chilean squad for six months, finally
succumbing heroically in the Angamos naval battle, faced with much superior forces.
He is considered the greatest hero of the Peruvian nation. His generosity towards the
enemy on the battlefield earned him the nickname "Knight of the Seas". After a contest
he was the winner of the title of "The Peruvian of the millennium". It was part of the
Seminario family of great historical importance in the department of Piura during the
19th century 2 He was the son of the Colombian colonel (nationalized Peruvian) Juan
Manuel Grau Berrío and the Peruvian lady Luisa Seminario del Castillo. He was born in
Piura, but it was in the port of Paita where he lived a large part of his childhood and
where he forged his seafaring vocation. At the age of nine, he embarked as an
apprentice cabin boy on the merchant ship Tescua. For ten years he sailed on different
ships and toured different ports in Asia, the United States and Europe. His death was
on October 8, 1879 at the age of 45 in Punta Angamos, Mussels, Bolivia.
