BSN 1-A Ethics

ACTIVITY ONE - Moral law is also called law of nature because early philosophers
thought that, generally speaking, everybody knows it by nature. Do human beings
really know that there is such a moral law? Defend your answer.

Absolutely, Yes. The concept of morality is innate to humans given that the concepts of
moral emanates from them. It is at their sense, cognitive behavior and observations
which the concept of right and wrong is justified. By that reason, anything that is
contrary to the law of nature is a clear manifestation of being against human. Simply,
morality came from the nature of human.

ACTIVITY TWO – When do we say that morality is absolute? Cite examples to support
your answer.

Absolute morality pertains to truth that exist and applicable to anyone. This is the pure
conduct/ manifestation of morality that excludes cultural beliefs set as a barrier being
enacted in a particular group of people. It talks about the universality and the application
of moral to a person as being human solely. Some examples include murder, rape,
racism, and torture that can be applicable across all cultures and everyone.

ACTIVITY THREE – What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom? Why is it
that philosophy gives more importance to wisdom over knowledge?

Knowledge is derived from facts while wisdom is the combination of knowledge and
experience. In philosophy, curiosity drives a person to go deep and stretch the truth
further than what it is. This curiosity could be triggered by our own observation and
experience. Consequently, to validate that curiosity, you need to apply that knowledge
to determine and assess. Thus, philosophy requires a holistic approach on things and
wisdom has the capability to view the totality of the process and open more doors for
knowledge exploration.

ACTIVITY FOUR - Differentiate between personality and character. What is the

significance of human action with regards to character?
Personality is about a person’s distinctive behavior having his physical attributes and
mannerism. Character on the other hand, is the choice of value. That is why in some
cases we do say “a test of character” because it is something within ourselves. In
making decisions and in being bold to stand on our point. Personality is the aspect of
body and Character is the aspect of human soul.

ACTIVITY FIVE - What is the demand of natural law according to Paul Tillich?

It is to be the person in the community of other persons. It is the application of yourself

in the outside of the environment. The process of knowing your personality within is the
same as knowing yourself in the reflection of the other people. It means you just not
need to be good unto yourself but also to others.

ACTIVITY SIX - What is legal is not necessary moral. Why? Give examples.

The concept of “legal” may vary across different beliefs and customs. Mainly, it is highly
driven by the cultural context of a particular society. For example, in Middle East
Countries, death penalty is allowed to be the punishment for a crime doer. This act is
considered a killing and immoral by nature and also not applicable in others customs
and beliefs. Also, the process of euthanasia, abortion and adultery.
