It was late and every one had left the café except an old man who sat in the
shadow of the leaves of the tree made against the electric light. In the day time
the street was dusty, but at night the dew settled the dust and the old man liked
to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he felt the
difference. The two waiters inside the café knew that the old man was a little
drunk, and while he was a good client they knew that if he became too drunk he
would leave without paying, so they kept watch on
him.
“ Last week, he tried to commit suicide,” one waiter said.
“ Why?”
“ He was in despair.”
“What about?”
“Nothing.”

Final Translation:

Gabi na, at lahat ay umalis sa karinderya maliban sa isang matandang

nakaupo sa anino ng mga dahon sa ilalim ng ilaw ng kuryente. Maalikabok
ang mga lansangan sa araw, ngunit sa gabi, tumatama ang usok, at ang
matanda ay bingi at gustong maupo. Ngayon ay tahimik sa gabi at may
kakaiba siyang nararamdaman. Alam ng dalawang tagapagsilbi sa
karinderya na medyo lasing ang matanda, kahit mabait ang customer na
ito ay alam nilang lasing ito at umalis ng hindi nagbabayad kaya nanatili

Gabi na at lahat ay umalis sa karinderya maliban sa isang matandang

lalaki na nakaupo sa anino ng mga dahon ng puno na ginawa laban sa ilaw
ng kuryente. Sa araw ay maalikabok ang kalye, ngunit sa gabi ay
tinatamaan ng hamog ang alikabok at ang matanda ay gustong maupo
dahil bingi siya at ngayon sa gabi ay tahimik at nararamdaman niya ang
pagkakaiba. Alam ng dalawang tagapagsilbi sa loob ng karinderya na
medyo lasing ang matanda, at habang mabait itong kliyente ay alam nilang
kung lasing ito ay aalis siya nang hindi nagbabayad, kaya patuloy silang
nagbantay sa kanya.

"Noong nakaraang linggo, sinubukan niyang magpakamatay," sabi ng

isang weyter.
" Bakit?"
