Ara: goodday fellow classmates and respected teacher! Welcome to this day session! We are super
excited to have you here. Excited about the amazing conversations that we have lined up just for you!
Introduction
I’m Ara Jane Mallari and I’m Ma. Meryll Gibaga and we are your reporters for today’s online session.
OBJECTIVE
Recalling Grammar
Basic grammar rules
Knowing the reasons why students struggled with grammar
Knowing the ways to assess grammar skills
Meryll: Before we proceed to our discussion, we prepared a inspirational video for the entire class.
( Video)
Meryll: How about you? What is it that you desire most?(Class question)at least two students
Meryll: How about you partner, what is it that you desire most?
Ara: As a future educator who is major in English, being good in grammar skills is the only thing that I
desire most and I'm aware that being good in grammar takes a lot of hardship and time.
Meryll: Great! I agreed with you partner. Just like what we've watched in our inspirational video,
studying grammar is definitely a great thing that we can do and great things happen when we our
consistent doing the things that we love without getting tired.
Ara: before we move on to our main topic, Let's take a step back and think about grammar. Is anyone
here that wants to share their knowledge about grammar?
Grammar is the study of words, how they are used in sentences, and how they change in different
situations.
Ara: Basically grammar is the rules of a language governing the sounds, words, sentences, and other
elements, as well as their combination and interpretation. The word grammar also denotes the study of
these abstract features or a book presenting these rules. In a restricted sense, the term refers only to
the study of sentence and word structure (syntax and morphology), excluding vocabulary and
pronunciation.
Because it provides information that helps the reader's comprehension. It is the structure that conveys
precise meaning from the writer to the audience. Eliminate grammatical errors from your writing, and
reward your readers with clear communication.
Meryll:Grammar provides information that helps the readers comprehension. It is the structure that
conveys precise meaning from the writer to the audience. Eliminate grammatical errors from your
writing, and it will help us to have make a clear communication.
Meryll : now, before proceeding to our main topic which is ways to assess grammar skills we need to
tackle grammar rules first because we cannot assess grammar if we didn’t know it’s rules.
1.Spelling errors– There is no excuse for having a spelling errors in a final draft. Everyone should use a
dictionary for checking the spelling. (Make the students read)
2.Run-on Sentences - Run-ons occur when you try to make one sentence do too much. (Make the
students read)
For example:
Marie gazed across the broad Pacific her heart was filled with dread.
Marie gazed across the broad Pacific. Her heart was filled with dread.
Using period, we can separate the sentence into two to make the grammar structure correct.
When Marie gazed across the broad Pacific, her heart was filled with dread.
As you can see, we add a subordinate clause “when” in the beginning of the sentence and added a
comma to make the sentence correct.
Marie gazed across the broad Pacific, but her heart was filled with dread.
For example:
As you may notice, the sentence used doesn’t contains a complete thought.
That’s why fixing fragments, it make sure your sentence contains both a subject and a verb and a
complete thought.
He leaped out of the window because there was no other way of escaping the fire.
4 Subject/Verb Agreement-If the subject is singular, use a singular verb; if the subject is plural, use a
plural verb:
If there’s a singular subject, the verb ends with ‘s’, and if there’s a plural subject, the verb does not
end with ‘s’.
5.Plural& Possessive-An "s" is put at the end of a word for two reasons: to make it plural or to show
possession.
Possessives for plural nouns: the books' pages; all of the students' desks
Plural means more than one, which requires adding only an “s” at the end of most words. Example:
snake becomes snakes (more than one snake). There is no apostrophe here. Possessive means
ownership, which requires inserting an apostrophe before the “s.” Example: snake's tongue, this means
that the tongue belongs to the snake.
Meryll:Now let’s tackle the reason why students struggled with grammar. Do you have any idea class?
Meryll : Now if there is a problem with grammar of course there are ways to assess it.
Meryll : We will now proceed to our main topic which is Ways to assess grammar skills.
ORAL INTERVIEW
You can do a one on one interview with each of your students to get a good idea of their
listening and speaking abilities.
You can schedule these types of interviews during class (perhaps take each student into the
hall to have a private discussion while the rest of the class does seat work) or schedule with
students individually.
Okay the first one is oral interview, Oral interview have two categories. The first one is it can be
the class type and also discussion and also it can be the private discussion in terms of private
and it’s called one-on-one interview of your student and also it can be have a schedule
uhhmmm and also it can be the seatmate of the student they can also uhmmm oral interview
each other. So in terms of oral, it can interview. It helps in terms of listening the singing of the
student. Uhmmm we are the one who needs to observe it and also to evaluate it and in terms
of speaking ability of our student of how they pronounce of how vocabularies that they have
are good, if their grammar structures are fine are upgrading. So that’s the way how oral
interview can help.
CLASS PRESENTATION
A presentation in class assesses a different aspect of spoken language. When you ask a student
to speak in front of the class, he is able to prepare and practice what he wants to say. He can
also research information on his topic.
The second one is the class presentation. So when we say class presentation it types uhmmm it
look like a reporting style. Okay, so in terms of class presentation, we discuss their uhmm
spoken language which is students how they have a different way of communicate. And also we
can observe their speaking skills of the students and how they become creative and how they
become critical thinking fast in certain topic that we will given on the spot. Also it can help
them to speak in the brain if it’s needed.
ROLE PLAY
Another way to assess your students' speaking abilities is by having them perform role-plays in
front of the class. By giving them a situation and roles to play, you can see how creatively your
students are able to use language with one another.
The third one is the role play. So how can well they help us to assess the grammar skills of our
students in terms of speaking ability that given of teacher to the students and also how the
students become creative to the character that she or he had. Also in terms of gestures, in
terms of pronunciation of the students in the front of the class. And also a role play can give
them creativity on how they make the role play easy and how the role play become funny or
even the flow of the play, how they can did it by a teamwork.
CLOZE EXAM
A cloze exam is an typical way to test the understanding your students have of grammar. To
write a cloze exam, write an original paragraph or take one that your students have used in
their studies. Then replace every fifth or sixth word with a blank. Ask your students to fill in the
blanks with words they think would be most logical and grammatical. You will see a variety of
answers among your students.
The fourth is the cloze exam, So cloze exam is just like a fill in the blank but this test is typically
understand the student grammar and it’s originally read to write to the paragraph form and
also the student if they have study on that certain tests. Ofcourse they are think logcally and
grammatically in terms of reading the correct words of the certain paragraph that you are given
as a teachers.
FILL IN THE BLANK
A fill in the blank test may seem similar to a cloze exam, but this type of test is used to test a
specific grammatical structure or set of vocabulary. You can write individual sentences or an
entire paragraph for your students, but it is probably best to provide a word bank in either case.
And here we go, the fill in the blanks, So how can fill in the blank help us well like what I said
earlier and it is similar to what cloze exam. But then in terms of fill in the blank, this type of test
is specifically in the grammatical structure and also the set of the vocabularies that given under
the test. So same thing like they have it a paragraph and their paragraph sentence for the
student. And that they students think what is the provided words for the certain blank.
WRITING SAMPLE
Having your students give you a writing sample is another good way to assess their proficiency
with grammar. If you have them write something for homework you run the risk that someone
other than your student will do the writing. Often friends or native speakers will correct a non
native speaker's writing with the intention of helping, but this will not give you an accurate
picture of your student's writing.
Okay and we have here Writing sample can help assess the grammar skills of the students so we
know that writing samples is very personal for every one of us. Why? because in the writing
samples it is include your opinion, it is included what of the back of your mind have it is include
the grammar structure that how you can write the words that you have and also it is a good
way to assess as a professional teacher that grammar proficiency of the student of how the
structure are good or bad or getting chaos (hahahaha) getting guys most of the time and it’s
also typically homework on the spot. In terms of on the spot it’s very uhmm perfect for us to
analyze what are the words that come up to the mind of the student when they hear examples
some topics if they given some uhmm some words can they relate on that specific one. Okay
and here we have here also the pronounciation, the punctuation of my students in terms of
writing uhmm skills, so that is how the writing skills can help.
PORTFOLIO
To expand the material you base your students' grades on, why not assign each person to
assemble a portfolio. A portfolio is a collection of work samples that cover several aspects of
the assignments your students have completed. This is an especially effective way to assess
your students if you have the same class for reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar.
Also we have it the portfolio. So the portfolio even the grade one (hahaha) even the elementary
they have it so in terms of portfolio it is include assigned to everyonevery personal for our
students. It includes works uhmm it includes all the activities of the students their written also
the creativity in terms of the other presentation like uhmm mga artworks that we are given. So
it’s very uhmmm have also can give us the tips because it is the same thing that how they are
become effective in terms of their reading, in terms of writing and listening and speaking and
also the grammar.
ONLINE QUIZ
You do not have to spend as much of your class time assessing your students as was often
necessary in the past. With the extensive collection of online resources for ESL students, you
can require your students to spend time at home or in a language lab period working on
exercises and quizzes available online.
And that’s down to online quiz. So here’s online quiz is very popular because nowadays uhhm
because of the pandemic and the platform of education that we have it is a very uhmm it is the
one that we use nowadays. So in terms of online quiz it is uhmm conduct on some research but
then it is a part of phase or as a student you need you just have a uhmm information
background. All in all it’s your ability t create or to make a structure of unsentenced paragraph
that you want to answer in the certain questions. Okay, so this is uhmm can have to assess the
student and if the student is still remember some topics that you have discussed or maybe
uhmm stock knowledge or also it can be unknowledgeable for the whole week uhm for the
whole sem or the whole quarter that you are done to discuss. And also it can uhmm spend time
to their home and also to their places where they are comfortable to work and also to answer
the exercise or the quizzes available and online. Well of course as a teacher you should uhmm
evaluate it.
