Requirements for Clean-up drawings
Clean-up is a part of the workflow in the production of hand-drawn animation.
✓ In larger studios this task is given to the animator's assistant, or, in a more
specialized setting, to a clean-up-artist. The artist doing the clean-ups is
responsible for the final line and finished look of the shot.

3
1. Key Animation- are poses drawn by the animator presenting the action and narrative
required by the scene.
2. Layout- guide to the positions of the elements in the scene and their size relationship to
each other and to the location of the scene.
3.Exposure sheets known as “x-sheet” or “dope sheet”- chart that shows frame by frame of all
drawings of every animated scene.
4. Model Sheet- a reference sheet of an animator that shows how a character is constructed
and how they would pose.
5. Story board- Visual narrative of the script in the forms of thumbnail drawings or frame work,
that shows the different scenes organized in a sequence of panels.

✓ You can speed up on fast action scenes, but take your time on slow acting
scenes and tracebacks.
✓ Perspective- find your horizon line - what’s above it is up - what’s below it
is down.
✓ Don’t feel limited by the flat, two-dimensional nature of the paper. If you
need help visualizing it as three-dimensional space, try drawing a box for
your character to stand in.
✓ Action lines- (especially useful in rough animation and key cleanup) When
creating or recreating a ruffs, find the basic action line and build your
drawing around it.
Straight Curves
Fig.5
Straights against curves create interest and tension.
✓ Straight against Curve - Use straight lines for tension, strength, hard
areas like knees and elbows. Curves for flow, sag and softness. Let them
play off one another, as they do in nature.
✓ Watch your arcs! - Plot arcs in red or blue before roughing in the character.
Check the layout- Are the characters feet well planted? Does the character
have to register to any background elements, or elements on a separate
level?
✓ Always stay organized - Work out a system and know your scenes status.
✓ Communicate - Ask questions, listen to the answers. Ask everyone,
teachers or animator if there is anything specific that they want you to
watch out for when beginning a new scene. Ask to review your drawing of
the rough animation. Lack of communication breeds suspicion in the unit.
✓ Pay close attention to the dialog - Sometimes it’s "on frame" and
sometimes it’s a frame ahead. Check the keys against the XSheet.
✓ Watch for lost details - such as whiskers, seep lines, and costume details.
A note on Eyes
✓ Watch perspective!
✓ On some characters lifting the pupil slightly away from the
white will strengthen focus.
✓ A crease showing the thickness of the eyelid can help with eye
direction.
✓ Indicate eyelashes on male characters with a darker line and
slight overlap for depth.
✓ Make certain that eyelids are hinged on outer corner - not like
a pull blind

For Inbetweening
✓ Note: There are no insignificant drawings. The eye can percieve up to 1/30 of a second
- your drawing will be on the screen 1/24 to 1/12 of a second. Your inbetweens can make
or break a scene.
SAQ -1: What makes your drawing most successful?

REMEMBER
Key Points
➢
➢ Clean-up animation is the process of creating the final drawings you see in the finished
film. It does not necessarily mean a “clean” fine line. The team of artists uses key
drawings and animation charts from the animator, making it appears as thogh one artist
has created the whole film.
➢ The clean-up artists will follow the intentions of the animators and stay true to
performance and movement.
➢ The clean-up can be done usually on a new sheet of paper. But they can be done also
on the same sheet as the rough animation. The finished animation will be copied on the
cels or transferred inyo a computer for further processing.

Direction: Draw the figure below you can start from scratch to
rough drawing and then do the final clean-up. Do not apply color
anymore.Draw on the answer sheet provided.
Note: the fig.with colors will just show you the looks of your drawing when in
Computer application.
