General Procedures

To develop a functional automated plant watering device, the

following procedures are set forth: All the materials should be gathered and

prepared beforehand and check if it is all in good condition to be used. The

essential materials such as the NodeMCU ESP8266, Relay Module, Soil

moisture sensor, jumper wires, 5V Submersible water pump, and the

Batteries were all newly bought to secure its functionality. The essential

sensor which is the soil moisture sensor, must be in good condition to

provide accurate and instantaneous readings for soil moisture level.

Proceeding, the researchers connect all the wires together.

Connection of wires is crucial in the process of developing the device for it to

operate well. Misarrange of the wires will lead to the malfunction of the

device. First, plug the end green-yellow cable to the pluggable terminal of the

soil moisture sensor. On the other end of the soil moisture sensor, connect

the “AO” pin to the “A0” Analog input of the NodeMCU.

Connect the digital pin “D2” of the NodeMCU to the “IN” pin of the

7
Relay Module. On the other end, connect the “NC” port to the submersible

water pump positive wire, and the “COM” port to the battery, then connect

the ground wire of the submersible water pump to negative ground wire of

the battery.

Proceeding to the making of the circuit, connect the NodeMCU board

to the corresponding components. The researchers used jumper wires to

connect one component to the other. Using the jumper wire, connect the

power pin “GND” of the NodeMCU board to the GND pins of the soil moisture

sensor and the relay module. Make sure that both GND pins of the sensor

and relay module must be

connected to the G pins of the NodeMCU. Connect the 3V power pin of the

NodeMCU to the VCC pin of the soil moisture sensor and connect another 3V

power pin to the relay module. To make the device run cable-free, connect

the “VIN” input of the NodeMCU to the positive wire of the battery; connect

also the G pin of the NodeMCU to the negative ground wire of the battery. To

control the electric current flow of the device, the researchers added a rocker

switch. In installing a switch, one must cut the positive wire of the battery and

strip it, connect one end to the switch input and the other to the opposite.

After making the circuit and putting it in the matrix board, the

NodeMCU board is now ready for programming. Programming the NodeMCU

board is crucial because it automates, manage, collect, and analyze the

processing of data which provides accurate readings. In programming, the

researchers upload the codes to the microcontroller. For uploading the codes,

8
download and install the Arduino IDE (Integrated Development Environment)

software in the computer. After installing Arduino IDE, install the NodeMCU

drivers in the windows. NodeMCU driver helps to communicate ESP8266

board to the computer. The Arduino IDE and the NodeMCU drivers are

readily available on the internet. Once the two are installed, connect the

NodeMCU board to the computer using a USB Cable. Open the Arduino IDE

and choose the correct board by selecting Tools>Board>ESP8266>NodeMCU

1.0 and choose the correct port by selecting Tools>Port, and upload now the

code in the software. The codes for the relay module and the sensor are

different for it to function, and once the codes are loaded into the Arduino

IDE, click the “upload” button located at the top bar. Once the upload is

finished, the message “done uploading” will appear on the status bar. A few

seconds after the upload, it should be observed that the NodeMCU board will

flash a blue light; The NodeMCU is now already up and running. After

configuring the code, researchers linked the NodeMCU board with the Blynk

application with the use of authentication token, the researchers made use of

the Wi-Fi module that is built inside the NodeMCU and utilized it to make the

system more convenient and flexible to use. After successfully linking the

device, the researchers had to set-up the web dashboard for pc monitoring

and Mobile dashboard for mobile monitoring after setting the gauge to the

right amount and right value. The Blynk application and the whole thing is up

and running, ready for monitoring use. To make the NodeMCU work by itself,

place the positive wire to the “VIN” pin and negative wire to the “G” pin of the

NodeMCU board.

9
The researchers already built a prototype of the device and now ready

to use but it is now the end of the process. In order for the prototype and the

circuit to be secured, the researchers built an enclosure which suits the

prototype and achieve its final form. Enclosure is built using acrylic glass

done by service provider. The prototype was put in the enclosure and glued

up to hold parts together and is now ready for evaluation.

For evaluation the soil moisture sensor must be calibrated first, for the

calibration of the soil moisture, it made use of garden soil that was dry, the

researchers placed the soil moisture sensor to the soil and record the

readings as a code in the software. And now, the device is ready to use in

monitoring the soil moisture level.

10
Results and Discussion

This part presents the discussion of results, data interpretation

derived from the conduct of the study, and the analysis giving emphasis on

the major findings which would determine the functionality of the device.

Analysis of Findings

The researchers conducted a self- evaluation of the functionality of

the soil moisture sensor and the device in terms of durability and efficiency.

The following results of evaluation in the functionality of the device were

interpreted according to a 4-point likert scale with the corresponding

adjectival description. For statement number one, the researchers just

interpreted data without using quantitative analysis.

1. Features of the automated plant watering device

The researchers made use of a soil moisture sensor for

monitoring the soil’s moisture and a water level regulator. For making the

circuit, the researchers used jumper wires to connect one component to

another. A matrix board is used to lay out electrical components securely and

pin headers to connect with the jumper wires. The researchers used a

NodeMCU as a microcontroller. The researchers made use of the Wi-Fi

module of the NodeMCU board by linking the Blynk application which can

display the readings through a web dashboard or a mobile dashboard. For

the power source, the device made use of a single 9V battery. The device is

11
also equipped with a customized closed enclosure made with wood and

acrylic glass to enclose the circuit properly.

2. Functionality of device in terms of soil moisture sensor
