Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

• Understand about the role of thermodynamics in refrigeration and air conditioning


system.

• Aquire basic knowledge about working of refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

• Design and Analiyse an air conditioning system for a particular installation.

Unit I
Introduction : A brief history of refrigeration, First law of thermodynamics,
Production of low temperatures, Necessity and applications of refrigeration, Unit of
refrigeration and C.O.P, Types of Ideal cycles of refrigeration, Open and Dense air
systems, Refrigeration needs of Aircrafts
Unit II
Vapour Compression System : Modifications in reversed Carnot cycle with vapour
as a refrigerant, Vapour compression cycle, Vapour compression system calculations,
Standard rating cycle and effect of operating conditions, Actual vapour compression
cycle, Standard rating cycle for domestic refrigerators, Heat pump and Second law
efficiency of vapour compression cycle, Reversed Brayton or Joule or Bell Coleman
cycle, Introduction to Multistage VCRS
Unit III
VCRS Components and Refrigerants : Compressor: Introduction and types of
compressors, General classification, Comparison, Advantages and Disadvantages,
Working principle and types of condensers, Types of condenser, Evaporator: Types of
evaporator, Working principle and types of expansion devices, Capillary tube and its
sizing, Automatic or Constant- Pressure Expansion valve, Refrigerants, Designation
and Selection of a refrigerant, Physical, Chemical and Thermodynamic properties of
refrigerants, Ozone depletion and Global warming potential of CFC refrigerants
Unit IV
Vapour Absorption System : Simple vapour-absorption system, Maximum
coefficient of performance of a heat operated refrigerating machine, Modification to
simple vapour absorption system, Electrolux refrigerator, Description and working of
NH3; water system, Practical single effect H2O-LiBr2 absorption system., Function of
generator, absorber and rectifier., Actual vapour absorption refrigeration system
Unit V
Psychrometry of Air-Conditioning Processes : Basic processes in air conditioning
of air, Psychrometric processes in air conditioning equipment, Simple air-conditioning
system and state and mass rate of supply air, Psychometric Properties & Processes,
Characterization of Sensible and latent heat loads, Need for Ventilation, Comfort Air
conditioning, Requirements of Industrial air conditioning, Year around air
conditioning, Concept of ESHF, Bypass factor and Apparatus dew point, Introduction
to RSHF, GSHF & ERSHF, Introduction to HVAC
Unit VI
Air conditioning system components : Equipment for cooling, heating
humidification and dehumidification, Fans and blowers, Heat Pump; Heat sources,
different heat pump circuits, Considerations for selection of filters and grills,
Requirements of Human comfort and concept of effective temperature., Requirements
of summer winter and industrial air conditioning, year round air conditioning
