Opening Remarks Congresswoman Lee serves on the House Budget
Committee and the powerful Appropriations
Committee, which oversees all federal government
spending. Congresswoman Lee is the highest-ranking
Woman of Color in Congressional Leadership, serving
as Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee
on State and Foreign Operations (SFOPS). She is the
first African American Member of Congress to serve as
Chair of the subcommittee, which funds many of the
nondefense international affairs activities of the United
States. Rep. Lee also serves as the House Democratic
Co-Chair of the Policy and Steering Committee. As
Co-Chair, Rep. Lee works to ensure that committees
reflect the diversity, dynamism, and integrity of the
Democratic Caucus. In addition, she currently serves as
the Chair of the Majority Leader’s Task Force on Poverty
and Opportunity, Co-Chair of the Pro-Choice Caucus,
Co-Chair of the Cannabis Caucus, and Vice Chair of
the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. She is the
former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and
current Chair Emeritus of the Congressional Progressive

Councilmember Lori Droste has served on
the Berkeley City Council for nearly eight
years, and in that time she has been a
champion for housing opportunity, high
quality infrastructure, and good governance.

Lori has broad experience in public service


and politics, working as an educator
and serving in numerous progressive
organizations. Although Councilmember
Droste is retiring from the Berkeley City
Council this year, she leaves a legacy of
working constructively with her colleagues
to advance equity, public safety, and climate
action.

Award Michael Morgan was the Music Director
and Conductor of Oakland Symphony for
30 years and he passed away on August
20, 2021.

Morgan made the Oakland Symphony


Orchestra socially authentic, demanded
equality, and he fashioned a unique,
informed artistic profile that attracted
one of the most diverse audiences in the
nation. His music reflected his beliefs:
reverence for the past, attuned to the
future, rooted in his adopted home of
Maestro Oakland. His spirit will always guide
the enduring future of the Oakland

Maestro Michael Morgan
Michael Morgan was born in Washington, D.C., where
he attended public schools and began conducting
at the age of 12. While a student at Oberlin College
Conservatory of Music, he spent a summer at the
Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, studying with
Gunther Schuller and Seiji Ozawa. He first worked with
Leonard Bernstein during that same summer.

His operatic debut was in 1982 at the Vienna State series, and he recently led the Orchestra on July 23 at
Opera, conducting Mozart’s The Abduction from the Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco in what the

providing funding for a monthly lunch/social
program for LGBTQ Elders -Lavender Seniors
