Quarter 1: Module 4
Interdependence of organisms:
Adaptation

What I need to know

Are you a keen observer? Have you ask yourself why worm stays in the leaves of the plant, a frog that stick in
the wall, and some other animals including you why you stay inside your house especially night time? This
behavior has something to do with we call adaptation. What is adaptation? Adaptation is the physical or
behavioural characteristic of an organism that helps an organism to survive better in the surrounding
environment.”

For better understanding, this module will help you understand about adaptation. How to cope oneself to
overcome some changes taking place in the environment.

After going to this module, you are expected to:

 Define adaptation
 Explain how organisms adapt to their environment
 Discuss the two kinds of adaptation

What’s In
You learned from our discussion about ecosystem. Again what is ecosystem? Did you remember its
components? Again, for you to remember ecosystem is an area in the environment in which living and
nonliving things interact with one another. It made up of two components, the biotic components (living
things) and the abiotic components (nonliving things).

What’s New
Organisms can survive only in environments in which their needs can be met. But if changes take place in that
environment, how organisms will survive or cope it? It means that organisms need to adapt themselves to
whatever changes in the environmental conditions for them to survive. Aside from the changes, what other
factors affect the life of the organisms? Are they living harmoniously? As we know that there are some other
animals that tend to become powerful in the said area and we can call them predator. And those eaten by
predator are called prey. In this lesson you will know how organisms adapt to their environment.

What Is it
The term adaptation came from the Latin “adaptō”, meaning “I fit” or “I adjust to”. It is a common word in
ecology and evolutionary biology. The organism tends to undergo changes to become more suited or fit to its
environment.

Every organism has a unique ecosystem within which it lives. This ecosystem is its natural habitat. This is
where the basic needs of the organism to survive are met: food, water, shelter from the weather and place to
breed its young. All organisms need to adapt to their habitat to be able to survive. This means adapting to be
able to survive the climatic conditions of the ecosystem, predators, and other species that compete for the
same food and space. An adaptation is a modification or change in the organism's body or behavior that helps
it to survive.

How do adaptations help animals survive in their environment?

Adaptation is the process by which a species becomes better suited to its environment and a result of
evolution. What are some of these adaptations?
 Hibernation – a dormant state resembling sleep over a winter
 Camouflage – color blending
 Mimicry – producing sound
 Foraging – keeping lookouts for predator
There are two main types of adaptation: physical adaptations are special body parts that help a plant or
animal survive in an environment, and behavioral adaptations are actions plants and animals take to survive.
Some species
use behavior
—such as
foraging less
in the open;
or keeping
lookouts for
predators
The special body parts of animals that help it to survive, Example a spider (has fangs), shark (has fin, sharp
teeth) and an eagle (has talons-hooked claw).

What’s More

Directions: Identify whether the kind of adaption is physical adaptation or behavioral adaptation and tell what
features of adaptation exhibited in the picture( hibernation, camouflage, special body parts, foraging, or
mimicry). Use a separate sheet for your answer.

What Can I do

Same as with the lower forms of animals, we humans have to cope up also to our environment. Like today
that we are facing such pandemic, can you give your own ways of adapting on this kind of situation? What are
those? Use a separate sheet of paper for your answer.

Additional Activities

Do this. Use a separate sheet of paper for your answer.

Go to an area in your surroundings. Identify a plant growing in that area of yours. What do you think are the
reasons why that plant survives in the area? What kind of adaptation that plant exhibits?
