Week 2 Study Guide

Hello future Engineers!

I hope you are now ready to learn Chemistry.
This week’s topic is about Thermochemistry.
Read this study guide carefully to understand the things that you need to accomplish
this week.
Here are the objectives for this week:
At the end of this week, you must be able to
• Determine English and SI Units of measurements
• Use conversion factors to correctly convert units of measurements
• Perform dimensional analysis
• Apply the rules of significant figures properly when doing executing
mathematical operations to measurements
• Apply conversion of units to solve problems related to temperature and
density
• Discuss concepts regarding gases
• Solve problems regarding gases

Module 1
There are required topics and an optional topic for this module.
Study the required topics first. You can study the optional topic on your spare time.

Study Module
• Study carefully the Study Module. Take note that there are links provided
there to help you with the course. Read the guides and the study questions.
They can help you in your learning. You are not required to submit anything
for this Study Module.
Activity Module
• Answer the Practice Exercises in the Activity Module. There are also Check-
Ups and a Self-Test that will help you prepare for your Module Test. Make
sure to answer them in all honesty. You are not required to pass/submit the
Activity Module.
Score Key
• The Score Key provides the answers to Activity Module. You are only allowed
to look at the Score Key when you encounter a Scoring Box.
Module Test 1
• This is the final test for Module 1. There are no Score Key this time.
• You are required to submit only 8 Module Tests. So, decide if you want to
answer this Module Test and submit it. Message me if you will not submit this
Module Test.
• If you don’t want to answer the Module Test, you have the option to create a
creative output that you can share in our FB Group. Message me for more
details.
• Submit Module Test 1 on Canvas. There is already a submission bin under
Week 2. Message me if you already submitted Module Test 1. Message me
as well if you are having problems in submissions.
• The submission format is PDF. It might be type written or a clear and clean
photo of your answer and solution. Message me if you are having problems
with the format.
• The format for the file name for submission is
SurnameInitials_MT1_Section. Example: PabellonJM_MT1_CPE1D or
PabellonJM_MT1_ME1D.
• The suggested due date for Module Test 1 is September 18, 2022, Sunday,
11:59 PM (Evening). Message me if you can’t submit on time and tell me a
new due date (still 11:59 PM). Note that the new due date that you will give
me is fixed and final. Be responsible. If you failed to submit before the due
date you set, you will get 0 for that Module Test.

Discussion Forum 1 (DF1)

I will post 3 DF1 threads that are available in our FB Group, World of Chemistry:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/893118631213820

Here are the required interactions for DF1:

1. Interact with at least 1 thread per discussion forum period.
2. Interact with at least 1 fellow learners per discussion forum period.
3. Post at least 1 original discussion forum thread per discussion forum period.
4. React to at least 1 original discussion forum thread by your fellow learners per
discussion forum period.

• Note that you can do more than 1 for each required interaction. This might
give you a higher score.
• The posts and interactions must be of high quality and original.
• I will not accept interactions such as “I agree”, “I disagree”, “I like your post”,
“Thank you for sharing”, etc. There must be proper explanations and
discussions that are supported by the materials for this course and other valid
and high-quality sources.
• Cite your sources properly using APA 7th Edition. Study and refer to the
following links for APA 7th Edition, referencing, and citations.
• https://libraryguides.vu.edu.au/apa-referencing/7FormatsAndExamples

center/plagiarism/plagiarism-
rules.html#:~:text=Whatever%20method%20you%20use%20to,own%20work

• Check the grammar and spelling of your posts and replies. One tip is to use
google docs. Type your texts in google docs and check for suggested
corrections for grammar and spelling. https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/
• Also, make sure that you are courteous and responsible in your posts and
interactions with fellow learners. Remember that we are in social media; many
people can see your behavior.

• You are required to participate and submit 8 DFs. So, decide if you want to
participate in this discussion forum. Message me if you will not participate in
this DF.
• Your original posts may be in any format allowed in the social media. As a
hint, you may refer to the self-introduction posts for ideas. If you are having
any issues in posting and format, please message me.
• If you are ready to submit your proof of participation for this DF, submit the
screen shots and links of your replies, posts, and interactions in a logical and
orderly manner. The format of submission is PDF. Submit this in Canvas
submission bin for Discussion Forum 1 under Week 2. Message me if you
have any issues regarding the submission.
• The format for the file name for submission is
SurnameInitials_DF1_Section. Example: PabellonJM_DF1_CPE1D or
PabellonJM_DF1_ME1D.
• The suggested due date for DF1 is September 25, 2022, Sunday, 11:59 PM
(Evening). Message me if you can’t submit on time and tell me a new due
date (still 11:59 PM). Note that the new due date that you will give me is fixed
and final. Be responsible. If you failed to submit before the due date you set,
you will get 0 for that DF.
• In checking your DFs, I will refer to the Rubrics for DF. Please refer to it as
well to guide your participation in DFs. Here is the link:

learn, the things you learned, realizations, and the things you still don’t know.
Progress Chart
• Rate how well you have accomplished the objective for this week. Please
refer to the objectives mentioned earlier.
Reflection

week. Feel free to include your experiences in your other courses and in your
personal life.

• Submit the WSE in PDF format in Canvas.

• Message me if you can’t submit WSE for this week and tell what is your plan
for submission. Tell me how many WSE you can make or anticipate to make.
Be honest with yourself.
• The format for the file name for submission is
SurnameInitials_WSE#_Section. Example: PabellonJM_WSE1_CPE1D or
PabellonJM_WSE1_ME1D.
• The suggested due date is September 5, 2022, Monday, 11:59 PM
(Evening). Again, message me if you can’t submit.

Submit you 5Qs to Canvas and message me if you already did. Thank you.

Guilds
You can now form guilds. Apply for guilds through this link:
https://forms.gle/odALZGbLVeTZmUxu5
Guidelines
• Create your own guild.
• Create a name, logo, and motto for your own guilds.
• You can only form guilds with students in the same school.
• Benefits of being in a guild is 500 AP every week in the guild.
• There will be interguild activities.
• You can only be a member of one guild.
• You may also create group chats.
• Guild points will be updated and will be contributed to the overall school
points.
For this week, just form your guilds. We will have our first interguild activity on Week
3.

Schools
Now, you have chosen your schools. You also have a School Leader (SL) also
known as “President”.
The role of SL’s is to be the voice of the students that belong to that school. If you
have concerns you can directly contact your respective SL and they will relay the info
to me.
Things that can be done this week:
• School Logo (Will become the official logo for the school GC and school
Discord)
• School Banner (Will become the banner for the school FB Group)
• School motto (will serve as a guiding principle for all the members of the
school)
• School Theme (Will serve as a guiding design for future content or activities)
• You may also appoint or elect officers for the school. The positions must be
relevant for your school. We don’t actually need treasurers or auditors. Make
it suitable for our online set-up. Make sure that every program CpE and ME
are represented well in your set of officers as well as every section if possible.
• The SLs will meet via Discord or Messenger to talk about possible school
activities. We will keep you posted.

Course Assessment
Kindly answer this course assessment for Week 1 and Week 2.
https://forms.gle/iWBJGoNovmkWJcVb7
In order for us to improve the course, a weekly course assessment will be done. This
is not required. Participation on this is voluntary and done anonymously. But I would
really appreciate it if you would do this regularly, so that I can continuously improve
the course for you. Thank you!
