During Heritage Week at your school, your class was asked to create a presentation about
community heroes. As part of your contribution to the class presentation you were asked by
your teacher to research and talk about the qualities of heroes. You were also asked to identify
someone in your community whom you consider to be a hero and outline reasons for your
choice. As you conducted your research, you found three articles and decided to use them to
help you make your presentation.

Nanny of the Maroons
Nanny of the Maroons is the only female National heroine in Jamaica. She is remembered for the
inspiration she gave to her people in fighting the English oppressors in the early 18th century.
Nanny was a leader of her village, Nanny Town in the parish of Portland, Jamaica. According to
Beverley Carey - “The Maroon Story”, Nanny died sometime between 1758 – 1762. Legend has
it that she possesses super human power.

George William Gordon (1820 - (1865)

George William Gordon, the son of a planter and one of his female slaves, was born at Cherry
Garden Estate in St. Andrew. Gordon was self-educated and became a successful landowner and
businessman.
He was one of the original founding members of the Jamaica Mutual Life Society, an insurance
company. Gordon was an exceptional “free coloured”; he championed the cause of poor blacks.
As a member of the Jamaica Assembly, his defense of the social and moral rights of the
oppressed made him an enemy of the colonial establishment, particularly Governor John Eyre.
In 1865 when the so – called Morant Bay Rebellion broke out, Gordon was arrested for
conspiracy, probably because he was a member of the same Baptist Sect that Paul Bogle
belonged to. Gordon had actually ordained Bogle as a Deacon in the Baptist Church. When
Gordon was arrested, the Government could find no evidence to support his arrest.
Marcus Garvey
Born in 1887 in the parish of St. Ann, Marcus Garvey was famous worldwide as a leader. His
call was for the improvement of black people.
In 1914 he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) which grew into an
international organization that still exists in Jamaica, the United States, and a number of other
countries.
Marcus Garvey was a black Nationalist and politician, and though he never won a seat in the
Jamaica Legislature (1920s), he never faltered as a spoke's person for the poor and oppressed.

Source 2: Modern Day Heroes

A modern-day hero is someone who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding
achievement, or noble qualities. A hero is someone who is usually associated with war or battle,
but heroes exist in everyday life. These persons who act courageously are called modern day
heroes. One such hero is Tremayne Brown.
Following a string of job offers, gifts and praises being heaped on him for his selfless, heroic act
of saving a drowning boy, Tremayne Brown is to be given a national award.
Minister of culture, Gender, Entertainment and sports Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange told The Gleaner
that Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, was moved by the actions of Brown, who risked his own
life to save 12-year-old Renaldo Reynolds, a student of Jones Town Primary.
Grange said the Prime Minister suggested that Brown be given a national award for his brave act.
Brown was awarded the Badge of Honour for Gallantry in October, 2018, when 171 other
Jamaica were conferred with national honors.
Renaldo was on his way home from school when he and his friends decided to play in the gully’s
rushing waters. He, however, got into difficulties and was swept away by the currents from
Seventh Street on Collie Smith Drive.
Residents attempted to save the boy but failed. However, Brown ran from the Boys’ Town
Vocational Training Centre, where he works part-time as a labourer, and jumped into the water
clutching the boy.
The currents washed the two away. They were found minutes later by residents – Brown with
one hand clinging to an overhanging limb and the other clutching the child who broke out in
prayer as his Saviour grew tired from his ordeal and the many cuts and bruises, he sustained as
he tried to grab on to the sides of the gully.

needs people like you, who will not think twice to help a stranger.

people as selfless as you.
