Fundamentals of Coaching

I. Learning Competency with Code

Explains fundamental concepts and principles of coaching in relation to ethical

standards ( SP FC11-Ia-e-1 )

II. Background Information for Learners:

Sports coaches have essential roles in the development of all sports. Most
importantly, coaches are usually those working at grassroots level, which is a very
critical stage in honing an athlete.

Coaching is a process that aims to improve performance and focuses on the

'here and now' rather than on the distant past or future. It is unlocking a person's
potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than
teaching them. Coaching requires sound understanding of athletes’ skills, capabilities
and attitude. Furthermore, this leads to an effective communication between coach –
athlete relationship.

To become a successful coach, it is important to consider the holistic

development of the athlete to help them reach their full potential.

III. Activity Proper:

Activity 1: Philosophy of Coaching

Lesson 1: Coaching Philosophy

You may think it is strange to start a practical coaching course by talking about
philosophy. This will be true not unless you have established the connection between
coaching and philosophy.

Philosophy is the way you perceive relationships, situations, experiences in life,

and how you value them. It determines every thought, every action and every decision
you make.

On the other hand, coaching is the process that aims to improve performance
and focuses on the ‘here and now’ rather than on the distant past or future. It is
unleashing a persons’ potential to maximize their own performance and helping them to
learn rather than teaching them.

To become successful in coaching, one’s coaching philosophy matters. It is a

statement of what you value and what approaches to apply in coaching. It covers your
purpose as a coach and how you will approach athletes’ development and winning.

Hence, a winning coach is a coach with a stern philosophy.

Activity 3: Your Three Selves

(The picture shows a scenario in coaching)

Think of your self–concept as your three selves.

1. First is your real self. It is what you actually are, what you personally possess
like what you think, what you feel, what you look, and how you act. It can be seen
by others, but because you have no way of truly knowing how others view you,
the real self is your self-image.
2. Second is your ideal self. This refers to the person you would like to be it
represents your values, your sense of right and wrong. Your ideal self is what you
expect and demand of yourself; it is typically based on moral principles acquired
from your family, other important people in your life, through self-reflections and
life experiences.
3. Lastly, is self-worth. It is a feeling that you are a good person who deserves to
be treated with respect. It is recognizing “I am greater than all of those things”. It
is a sense of one’s own value as a human being. Knowing your three selves is
important because when you have a better understanding of yourselves, you are
able to experience yourselves as unique and separate individual. You are then
empowered to make changes and to build on your areas of strength as well as
identify areas where you would like to make improvements.

Activity 4: Discovering Your Potentials as a Coach

In the next activity, examine your self’s potentials as a coach. Given below are
characteristics of an ideal coach. Rate yourself using the scale 1-5 where 5 is the
highest and 1 being the lowest. Put a check on the column corresponding your answer.

An ideal coach is…

Rating
Characteristics
5 4 3 2 1
Positive thinker
Enthusiastic
Supportive
Trusting
Focused
Goal-oriented
Observant
Respectful
Patient
Clear communicator

Activity 5: Developing a Coaching Philosophy

A well–defined philosophy in life can impact a possible career in coaching. It can

be a guide when one engages in any coaching endeavor. One develops his or her
philosophy by examining one’s self and thinking through important life experiences and
values. These help establish guiding principles for decision-making and actions taken.
The most important ingredient of a philosophy is that one owns it. Espousing the
tenets of someone else’s philosophy without acting in a way that is consistent with these
are deceiving one’s self and others. A philosophy is not really expressed by what is said
but what is done!
Disclosure of one’s self to his or her athletes helps to know oneself better,
develop one’s austere philosophy, and trusting relationship.
