A SHORT PRAYER TO
MEDICINE BUDDHA
THE DRUKPA LINEAGE

Drogon Tsangpa Gyare, the founder of Drukpa lineage was known


to be an embodiment of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrigzig), the Buddha
of Great Compassion. He had earlier come to this world as the
famed Indian Mahasiddha Naropa (1016-1100), to whom the Six
Bone Ornaments were offered by the Dakinis in Zanskar.

The Drukpa lineage was founded by Drogon Tsangpa Gyare (1161–


1211), when he manifested as the outstanding disciple of
Mahasiddha Lingchen Repa. His name means “Protector of Beings
(Drogon), born in the land of Tsang, from the noble clan of Gya, a
cotton-clad yogi (Re)”.

In 1206, Tsangpa Gyare witnessed nine dragons flying up into the


sky from the ground of Namdruk in Tibet with a loud clap of
thunder. Following this auspicious event, he named his spiritual
lineage as “Dongyu Palden Drukpa or The Glorious Lineage of
the Dragons” – “The Drukpa Lineage”. “Druk” in Tibetan means
“Dragon”, and it also refers to the sound of thunder. In this way,
Tsangpa Gyare became the founder of the lineage and was known
as the First Gyalwang Drukpa. From then onwards successive
reincarnations were known as Gyalwang Drukpa and recognized
as the supreme Head of the Drukpa Lineage.

Tsangpa Gyare popularly came to be known as Druk Thamchay


Khyenpa, the Omniscient Dragon due to his spiritual attainments,
and was known as the First Gyalwang Drukpa. Thousands of his
followers became enlightened within a lifetime and they were able
to grant immense blessings to every being who came into contact
with them.

It is said that when Tsangpa Gyare passed away in 1211, numerous


auspicious signs appeared on the day of his cremation. A rainbow
canopy appeared with a shower of flowers and many heard
celestial music, and the atmosphere was filled with a beautiful
aroma. His heart, tongue and eyes remained intact when his body
was cremated, his skull bore the images of Arya Avalokiteshvara,
Manjushri and Vajrapani, and the twenty-one joints of his vertebrae
transformed into twenty-one self-arisen images of Avalokiteshvara
(Rangjung Kasarpani). Many of these relics are to this day preserved
in various Drukpa monasteries and are considered to be the most
sacred relics of the Drukpa tradition.

The lineage spread throughout the Himalayas, and is renowned


for the pure qualities of its practitioners and the numerous yogis
who have attained enlightenment. The profusion of its disciples
and the influence of its practices and teachings gave the Drukpa
lineage a proverb of its own in the tapestry of Himalayan culture:
Half of the people are Drukpas;
Half of the Drukpas are Yogis; and
Half of the Yogis are Enlightened Beings.

Tsangpa Gyare’s two main disciples, Gyalwa Lorepa and Gyalwa


Gotsangpa, together with Gyalwa Yangonpa, a disciple of Gyalwa
Gotsangpa, were collectively known as Gyalwa Namsum, “the
Three Victorious Ones”. The followers of Gyalwa Lorepa came to be
called the “Lower Drukpas”; the followers of Gyalwa Gotsangpa
came to be called the “Upper Drukpas”; and the followers of Onrey
Dharma Sengye, nephew of Tsangpa Gyare, came to be called the
“Middle Drukpas”.

The popularity of the Drukpa lineage among practitioners seeking


enlightenment is also described in another saying:

Followers of Upper Drukpa are like stars in the galaxy;


Followers of Lower Drukpa are like dust on the ground;
Followers of the Middle Drukpa are the grains of sand on the
river bank.

Even today, at a time that is critical for the Buddha Dharma, the
Drukpa lineage is responsible for more than a thousand monastic
centers across the Himalayas and it has also spread to many
countries in the world, with one motivation– to spread the teaching
of eradicating suffering and of attaining individual and collective
happiness, peace and harmony.
The Kingdom of Bhutan, considered as one of the few remaining
Buddhist kingdoms in this world and a pure land in the Himalayas,
also takes the name of “Druk” or “Druk Yul”, meaning “the Land of the
Thunder Dragons” and its people are known as “Drukpas”, followers
of the Drukpa lineage. This is because, in the 17th century, Zhabdrung
Ngawang Namgyal (1594-1651), one of Tsangpa Gyare’s fourth
incarnations came to Bhutan in 1616 and unified the warring regions
in Bhutan as a country and established the dual system of
government. During his reign, he built many fortresses and
monasteries which serve as centers of important functionaries and
forms an integral part of Bhutan’s traditional architecture in the
present day. Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal devised many of
Bhutan’s heritage, traditions and culture, creating a distinct and
unique cultural identity for Bhutan.
༄༅། །སྐྱབས་འགྲོ་ནི།
REFUGE AND BODHICHITTA

སངས་རྒྱས་ཆོས་དང་ཚོགས་ཀྱི་མཆོག་རྣམས་ལ། །
SANG GYÉ CHÖE DANG TSHOG KYI CHOG NAM LA
In the Buddha, Dharma and the Supreme Assembly,

བྱང་ཆུབ་བར་དུ་བདག་ནི་སྐྱབས་སུ་མཆི། །
JANG CHUB BARDU DAGNI KYABSU CHI
I take refuge until enlightenment.

བདག་གིས་སྦྱིན་སོགས་བགྱིས་པའི་བསོད་ནམས་ཀྱིས། །
DAG GI JINSO GYIPEI SÖENAM KYI
By the merit of my generosity and other perfections,

འགྲོ་ལ་ཕན་ཕྱིར་སངས་རྒྱས་འགྲུབ་པར་ཤོག །
DrOLA PHEN CHIR SANG GYÉ DrUB PAR SHOG
May I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings.

THE FOUR IMMEASURABLE
THOUGHTS

སེམས་ཅན་བདེ་དང་ལྡན་འགྱུར་ཅིག །
SEMCHEN DÉ DANG DEN GYUR CHIG
May all beings obtain happiness and be happy.

སྡུག་བསྔལ་རྒྱུ་དང་བྲལ་གྱུར་ཅིག །
DUG NGEL GYU DANG DrEL GYUR CHIG
May all remain free from sorrow and the cause of sorrow.

བདེ་བ་དམ་དང་མི་འབྲལ་ཤོག །
DÉWA DAM DANG MIDrEL SHOG
May all never be separated from authentic happiness.

ཆགས་སྡང་བྲལ་བའི་བཏང་སྙོམས་ཤོག །
CHAG DANG DREL WEI TANG NYOM SHOG
May all remain in a state of equanimity,free of attachment
and aversion.

SEVEN BRANCH PRAYER

ཕྱག་འཚལ་བ་དང་མཆོད་ཅིང་བཤགས་པ་དང་། །
CHHAGTSHEL WATANG CHHOECHING SHAGPA TANG/
Prostrating, offering, confessing,

རྗེས་སུ་ཡི་རང་བསྐུལ་ཞིང་གསོལ་བ་ཡི།
JESU YIRANG KULZHING SOLWA YI/
rejoicing, requesting and supplication,

དགེ་བ་ཅུང་ཟད་བདག་གིས་ཅི་བསགས་པ།
GEWA CHUNGZED DAGKI CHISAG PA/
whatever little virtue is accumulated through these means,

ཐམས་ཅད་རྫོགས་པའི་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཕྱིར་བསྔོའོ།
THAMCHED DZOGPEI JANGCHHUB CHHIR NGOWO/
I dedicate it to attainment of Perfect Enlightenment.

The Seven Point Mandala –
The Abridged Offering

ས་གཞི་སྤོས་ཀྱི་བྱུགས་ཤིང་མེ་ཏོག་བཀྲམ།
SAZHI POEKYI JUKSHING METOK TRAM/
The ground is anointed with perfumed water and scatterd
with flowers,

རི་རབ་གླིང་བཞི་ཉི་ཟླས་བརྒྱན་པ་འདི།
RIRAB LINGZHI NYIDE GYENPA DI/
Decorated with Mount Meru, four continents, sun and
moon.

སངས་རྒྱས་ཞིང་དུ་དམིགས་ཏེ་འབུལ་བ་ཡིས།
SANGGYE ZHINGTU MIGTE BULWA YI/
Thinking of it as a Buddha Land; I offer it -

འགྲོ་ཀུན་རྣམ་དག་ཞིང་དུ་སྤྱོད་པར་ཤོག །
DrOKUN NAMDAG ZHINGTU CHOEPAR SHOG/
may all beings enjoy this Pure Land!

གུ་རུ་ཨི་དམ་རཏྣ་མཎྜལ་ཀཾ་ནི་རྻཏཱ་ཡཱ་མི།
GURU IHDAM RATNA MANDALA KAMNIR YATA YAMI/

HUNG KU DHOG BAY DHUR YA YI RI WO DRA
HUNG. Your body is like a mountain, the color of lapis lazuli.

འགྲོ་བ་སེམས་ཅན་ཀུན་གྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་སེལ༔
DROWA SEM CHEN KUN GYI DUG NGEL SEL
You dispel the suffering of illness in sentient beings.

བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ་བརྒྱད་ཀྱི་འཁོར་གྱི་བསྐོར༔
JANG CHUB SEMPA GAY KYI KHOR GYI KOR
Surrounded by a retinue of eight bodhisattvas

རིན་ཆེན་སྨན་འཛིན་ལྷ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད༔
RIN CHEN MEN DZIN LHA LA CHAG TSEL TÖ
Holder of Medicine, precious deity, I praise and prostrate to
you.

མཚན་ལེགས་རིན་ཟླ་གསེར་བཟང་མྱ་ངན་མེད༔
TSEN LEG RIN DHA SER ZANG NYA NGEN MED
Excellent Name, Precious Moon, Fine Gold, Free of Misery,

ཆོས་བསྒྲགས་རྒྱ་མཚོ་ཆོས་བློ་ཤཱཀྱ་ཐུབ༔
CHHOE DRAG GYA TSHO CHHOE LO SHA KYA THUB
Resounding Dharma Ocean, Dharma Mind, Shakyamuni,

དམ་པའི་ཆོས་དང་སེམས་དཔའ་བཅུ་དྲུག་སོགས༔
DAM PAI CHHOE DANG SEM PA CHU DRUG SOG
The genuine dharma, the sixteen bodhisattvas and others,

དཀོན་མཆོག་རིན་ཆེན་གསུམ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད༔
KON CHHOG RIN CHEN SUM LA CHHAG TSEL TÖ
To the precious three jewels, I offer praise and prostrate.

ཚངས་དང་བརྒྱ་བྱིན་རྒྱལ་ཆེན་ཕྱོགས་སྐྱོང་བཅུ༔
TSHANG DANG GYA JIN GYAL CHHEN CHHOG CHONG CHU
To Brahma, Indra, the Great Kings, the Protectors of the Ten
Directions,

གནོད་སྦྱིན་སྡེ་དཔོན་བཅུ་གཉིས་གཡོག་དང་བཅས༔
NOE JIN DHE PON CHU NYI YOG DANG CHAY
The twelve Yaksha chiefs and all their assistants,

ལྷ་མི་སྨན་གྱི་རིག་འཛིན་དྲང་སྲོང་ཚོགས༔
LHA MI MEN GI RIG DZIN DRANG SONG TSHOG
Vidyadharas and rishis of medicine, divine and human,

བདུད་རྩི་སྨན་གྱི་ལྷ་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་བསྟོད༔
DUE TSI MEN GYI LHA LA CHHAG TSHAL TÖ
To the deities of ambrosial medicine, I offer praise and
prostrate.

བདག་མདུན་ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་ཧཱུྃ་ལ་བསྔགས་ཕྲེང་བསྐོར་བར་དམིགས་ལ།
The HUNG in the heart of the self and front visualizations is surrounded by the
mantra garland.

ཏདྱཐཱ། ཨོཾཾ བྷཻཻཥཛྱེེ། བྷཻཻཥཛྱེེ། མཧཱབྷཻཻཥཛྱེེ།


རཱཛསམུངྒཏེེསྭཱཧཱ༔
TAYATA OM BEKENDZE BEKENDZE MAHA BEKENDZE
RADZA SAMUDGATE SO HA

Visualization:
Through radiating many-colored light rays, offerings are made to Menla
in the pure realm appearing in the east as the color of lapis lazuli. These
lights invoke his mind stream, whence Menla’s bodies, large and small,
his speech as the mantra garland, his mind as the hand symbols of
the arura and the begging bowl filled with amrita, all falling like rain,
dissolve into myself and the front visualization.

DEDICATION OF MERITS

དགེ་བ་འདི་ཡིས་མྱུར་དུ་བདག །
GÉWA DIYI NYURDU DAG/
By this virtue,

སངས་རྒྱས་སྨན་ལྷ་འགྲུབ་གྱུར་ནས། །
SANGYE MEN LHA DrUBGYUR NÉ/
may I quickly attain the state of Medicine Buddha,

འགྲོ་བ་གཅིག་ཀྱང་མ་ལུས་པ། །
DrOWA CHIGKYANG MALÜE PA/
and then lead every living being without exception

དེ་ཡིས་ས་ལ་འགོད་པར་ཤོག །
DÉYI SALA GÖEPAR SHOG/
to that ground.

ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཀུན་ལ་སྙོམས་པའི་བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས། །
THUG JE KUN LA NYOM PAI CHOM DHEN DHE
With unconditional compassion for all, the Victorious one,

མཚན་ཙམ་ཐོས་པའི་ངན་འགྲོའི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་སེལ། །
TSHEN TSAM THOE PAI NGEN DROI DUG NGEL SEL
Hearing your name only, miseries of sentient beings are
cleared.

དུག་གསུམ་ནད་སེལ་སངས་རྒྱས་སྨན་གྱི་ལྷ། །
DUGSUM NÉSEL SANGYE MENGYI LHA/
Medicine Buddha, who cures the sicknesses of the three
poisons,

བཻ་ཌཱུརྻ་ཡི་འོད་ཀྱི་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག །
BENDURYA YI ÖEKYI TrASHI SHOG/
through your lapis lazuli light, may all be auspicious!
