Introduction

Comparing Integers

When comparing integers, you can use a number line and this is what we will use
to show you how to compare integers.

The Number Line

Any number to the right of 0 gets bigger and bigger as you move to the right.

Therefore, if the numbers are positive, the smaller number is the one closer to 0.

Any number to the left of 0 gets smaller and smaller as you move to the left.

So, if the numbers are negative, the bigger number is the one closer to zero

Remember: Numbers on the left are always smaller than numbers on the right.
Lesson Proper

Addition of Integers

Rules for Adding Integers:

1. The sum of two positive integers or two negative integers is equal to the sum of their
absolute values and the sign of the sum is the sign of the addends.
2. The sum of two integers with unlike signs is the difference between their absolute
values and the sign of the sum is the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value.

Subtraction of Integers

Rules for Subtracting Integers:

1. To subtract integers, add the opposite or additive inverse of the second number.
2. If the signs are the same, add and keep the sign.
3. If the signs are different, subtract and affix the sign of the larger number to the answer.

Multiplication of Integers

Rules for Multiplying Integers:

1. The product of integers of the same signs is positive.
2. The product of integers of the different signs is negative.
