Introduction to Illustration

Quarter 1 Week 1

Illustration is a decoration, interpretation, or visual
explanation of a text, concept or process, designed for
publication in a variety of media.

An illustration is a visualization that is made by an

artist. The goal of each illustration is to explain
information. It can be a drawing, a photograph, a
collage, etc. It doesn’t matter. As long as it keeps its
purpose – to visually represent facts and details.

An illustration can explain an idea even without the text

nearby. People who look at the picture should see the story,
"read" it as they would read the text. To tell a story with an
illustration means to convey some meaning, to explain a
certain context only with the help of an image.

4
Drawings are visual expressions used to convey feelings
and emotions evoked within the artist. On the other
hand, illustrations are visual expressions that help
people further understand and visualize the
accompanying textual content.

While an illustration is there to explain something

visually, art paintings have are not connected to any
information. They are a subject of interpretation.

Usually, graphic designers work with ready-made objects, and their

task is to create suitable compositions from them. Illustrators create
products themselves (even if they are collages). The main task of the
designer is to create a successful product that will meet the
requirements of the customer and the needs of the target audience.

5
Relevance of the Course
Illustration plays a key role in all formats where
visual meaning and storytelling use images to
render a narrative. Illustrators are trained
professionals who can draw in a variety of
media not limited to pen and pencil, but also,
especially in today’s hyper-digital world, digital
image-making. Being able to utilize the best of
technology to render images is becoming
essential for any aspiring illustrator.
