PRINCIPLES OF COUNSELING BRIEF EXPLANATION
1. Autonomy Autonomy refers to the ability of a counselor to know
when to give his/her clients some space to make
decisions for themselves.
2. Justice Justice refers to the fairness of the counselor to all of
his/her clients. Treatments used should be equal in
some aspects, exceptions only apply in special cases
but apart from that, all clients must be treated equally at
all times.
3. Non-maleficence Non-maleficence refers to not harming clients in any
way possible – which includes both physical and
emotional pain.
4. Beneficence Beneficence refers to acting accordingly to the best
interests of the client. Assessment must be applied to
cater the needs of a client efficiently.
5. Fidelity Fidelity refers to loyalty, faithfulness, and commitments.
A counselor must not leave obligations unfulfilled in
order to strengthen the trust that clients have on them.
6. Veracity Veracity is telling the truth at all times. A counselor must
be truthful to his/her clients about their conditions. This
is also to build trust and help them go through obstacles
properly.
7. Communication Communication is simply having a good client-clinician
relationship. This is that a treatment plan goes smoothly
and minor problems can be resolved immediately.
8. Empathy Empathy is putting yourself in someone’s shoes. In
counselling, a counselor should be able to truly and
fully understand what emotions his/her clients go
through to be able to appropriately help them.
9. Confidentiality Confidentiality simple refers to keeping a client’s
condition in private; not releasing anything to anyone to
make sure a counselor keeps the trust of his/her clients.
10. Individuality Individuality refers to treating every client case uniquely.
A counselor must not take any case lightly and should
not compare his/her clients openly to avoid potentially
worsening their condition

Procedure:
1. Read and research on the different principles of counseling.
2. Make a concept map about those principles.
3. Make a table chart for those principles and provide a brief explanation of each
principle.
Questions:
1. What are the different principles of counseling?

Justice, Autonomy, Non-maleficence, Beneficence, Fidelity, Veracity,

Individuality, Communication, Empathy, Confidentiality

2. What are the factors that contribute to the success of counseling?

These factors contribute to the success of counseling because practicing

every principle throughout a whole treatment plan will ensure the cooperation of
a counselor’s client throughout the whole process. Not only that, a counselor
also will gain their clients’ full trust and they will be more efficient with giving
the treatment steps.

3. Why is it important to observe those principles in conducting counseling sessions?

Like said above, observing these principles are important because all
counselors need to ensure that they have the trust and cooperation of their
clients. Furthermore, it’s easier to pinpoint a certain problem and solve it during
the treatment process if a client is able to communicate freely and easily with
his/her counselor.
