Instance 1:

The first instance where the fiction between Lisa and Linton was during her first day in
office. Linton remarked the ‘she doesn’t like MBAs’. This remark along with the cool
and disinterested welcome she got from her boss was a primary friction point

Instance 2:

Richard Clark, the group product manager who had impressed her during the
recruitment process barely recognized her neither welcomed her into the organization.
The welcome which he given was a cold welcome.

Instance 3:

Scoville’s condescending way he spoke to her and the fact that he was acting like an
overbearing big brother. He assigned her menial tasks like copying reports. This was
another friction point during her first few weeks

Two ways in which Lisa can improve her relationship with Scoville as per OCEAN
framework analysis:

1. Lisa should be more open in communicating with Scoville as she now understands
what his trigger points and personality traits are. She can be more careful with
her choice of words and actions and can use his eagerness to share knowledge to
learn about other facets of the job
2. Lisa could try to be “buffer” between Scoville and other peers. If Lisa helps
Scoville in his work, Scoville will eventually end up liking Lisa for his benefits.
Lisa got the project of Pure and Fresh which seemed like an unnecessary product
to her. She can use her skills and different marketing strategies take this up with
Scoville who has been appreciative of her work in the past and has shown
willingness to try to cooperate by working together.

b) Lisa was quite known to herself but not to others. Linton was failed to recognize
her analytical skills, intellectual skills,’ and organizational abilities. Lisa should
use her assertive personality to reduce this area. Lisa should act more like herself
by revealing feelings and stop being reluctant to share it with others. She should
rather showcase her hidden positive talents for wider reach in turn getting
recognized by her true self to others in the organization.

Question 4

Linton should have used simple words and should not have been too direct with this
comments.

Linton could use words like ‘I like, I wish, I wonder’ Technique. The Technique states
the feedback should start with I like, I wish, and I wonder..

Even the 3-2-1 technique could have been used, It involves the following steps:

• Name three things that you liked


• Name two areas that could be improved in the employee’s work
• Highlight the one thing that you liked the most.

The three engagement tactics that could have helped Lisa in feeling more motivated to
work in Houseworld are:

1. Physical engagement: This is the extent to which the employees expand their
efforts while doing their job. This increasis the feeling of confidence and ensures
that the employee is putting right energy and resources. The compnay should
encourage new joinees like Lisa to speak their mind without any fear of criticism
or judgement. This message should be clear to all manager level roles so that they
reciprocate the same thing to their teams
2. Cognitive Engagement: The employees should understand that the company’s
vision and strategies. The more knowledge the employee has regarding the
organization goals and what is expected of her, more creative the deliverables are.
This focuses on whether the employee perceives their role/task as meaningful. As
soon as Lisa joined House world she should have been briefed about her career
progression goals.
3. Emotional engagement: The employee should feel emotional relationship with the
employer. Through this strategy the manager should build trust among employees
and make them feel safe and appreciated. Linton should have provided on the
spot recognition for Lisa, whenever she did a good job.

1. Persuasion: Lisa is good with her job. She can use the expert knowledge
she has to influence Linton and Scoville to agree to her point of view using
logical arguments and emotional appeals. This can help her to provide her
point of view in front of them in various Ad agency meeting.
2. Impression: Lisa knew that both Linton and Scoville don’t like MBAs. So
she can make effort to portray herself as a trust worthy team member
which can help her to make good impression on them and build trust with
them.

The two hard tactics that can be used by Lisa Benton are:
1. Assertiveness: Lisa can use the expert knowledge to put forward her point
of view that she is an expert in this, and she has done this numerous times
and that’s the reason they have hired her and that is what they should do
in this situation.
2. Information Control: Lisa is an extrovert and is very likeable. She could
have used these characteristics to collect information from various other
departments and can use this information to her advantage

Lisa’s co-workers breached ethics at multiple occasions as per the case study.

There are numerous conflicts that arise and damage the relationship of Lisa with her
boss and co-workers. There should be discussions of issues and principles at three
general “levels” with regards to business ethics:

• Micro Level concerning the behavior of individual working within or interacting


with businesses.
• Mid-level concerning the activities, policies, and governance structures of
organization like firms, non-governmental organization (NGOs) and professional
associations
• Macro level concerning the structure of markets and their regulation within
democratic state and an international economy.
1. Discrimination in treating employees: From the beginning Linton and
Scoville made it clear to Lisa they didn’t like MBAs.
2. Non-Transparency in communication: Because of the policy of the Home
care Division, the recruiting practice emphasized recruiting MBA’s from
top notch schools for entry level marketing positions. This decision made
Linton and Scoville to feel that they will not get promoted as MBA’s will be
preferable.
3. Equal opportunity: As Linton disliked Lisa , Benton did not assign
challenging tasks to Lisa. This hampered Lisa’s changes to grow even
though she has the skills and expertise more way than Linton.

Three arguments to support that Lisa should continue with her job and not quit.

1. The low choice alternative option. Right Away’s offer is higher than Houseworld,
however Lisa lacks self-confidence to manage the huge marketing responsibilities
even though she is capable to manage difficult tasks. She thinks that there would
be no long-term goal and she would not learn much from them being a small
company.
2. If Lisa leaves Houseworld she may be happy because she will not have to deal
with unhelpful management, but she may be unhappy due to limited
opportunities to grow as Right away is small company and may regret later that
she didn’t stay back at Houseworld
