CONTROL PODS
The Control Pods contain the valves that direct the hydraulic power fluid to
the various components for the operation of the blowout preventer stack.
The hydraulic fluid is supplied to the pods through the 1" lines in the Control
Hose Bundles and from the subsea accumulators. The pods contain pressure
regulators, three- way two-position and four-way three-position pilot oper-
ated valves.
There are two identical control Pods on each stack, color coded blue and yel-
low, and each pod can be independently lowered and retrieved.

OPERATING PROCEDURES
2. Move the BOP, the Annular Preventer, and the Ball Joint Regulator
Control Selectors to LOCAL.
3. Set the BOP, the annular Preventer, and the Ball joint regulators on
zero psi.
C. Connect the reel hoses to the Control Pods. (Blue reel hose to Blue Pod;
Yellow reel hose to Yellow Pod.)
E. Align the rotational pins on the baseplate with aligning holes in the
lower pod plate.
Note: The gap between the male housing and the female sockets is not more than
1/8 inch.
1. Move the Pod Connector Riser and Pod Connector Stack valves to
RETRACT, (Blue Pod and Yellow Pod)
Caution: All pod connectors must be in the RETRACT position before hydraulic
pressure is applied. Other stack functions must be in the center position.
TC8081 2-3
Note: Allow three minutes for the pressure to stabilize. Observe the panel pressure
at the Panel Pressure gauge.
4. Move the Pod Connector riser valve to EXTEND. (Blue Pod and Yellow
Pod)
5. Move the Pod Lock valves to LOCK. (Blue Pod and Yellow Pod)
7. Observe the Flow Counter to ensure that the riser accumulators are
full.
10. Test thr riser functions of the Blue Pod according to rig procedures.
12. Test the riser functions of the Yellow Pod according to rig procedures.
4. Ensure that the Riser Stab Assembly alignment pins are properly en-
gaged.
1. Move the Pod Connectors Stack to EXTEND (Blue Pod and Yellow
Pod). Allow ten minutes for the connectors to fully extend.
TC8081 2-4
2. Test the stack functions of the Yellow Pod according to rig proce-
dures.
4. Test the stack functions of the Blue Pod according to rig procedures.
A. Install the Control Pods and Riser Stab Assembly as outlined in Part I
above.
1. Set the BOP, the Annular Preventer, and the Ball joint regulators on
zero psi.
4. Move the Pod Lock valves to LOCK. (Blue Pod and Yellow Pod).
TC8081 2-5
Note: Set the controls on both reel panels identically.
1. Move the Selector valve to the pod selected (Blue Pod or Yellow Pod).
Caution: Ensure that the stack is in the proper position on the wellhead before
latching the wellhead connector.
J. Unreel enough hose to allow for rig heave according to rig procedures.
TC8081 2-6
M. Operate the following at the Master Hydraulic Control Panel.
1. Set the BOP, the Annular Preventer, and the Ball Joint regulators on
zero psi.
Note: Allow two minutes for signal hoses to bleed to zero psi.
4. Ensure that the Riser Connector and Wellhead Connector valves are
on LATCH and the Pod Connectors Stack is on EXTEND.
TC8081 2-7
7. Move the Retractable Connectors Stack to EXTEND.
1. Move the Selector valve to the pod selected (Blue Pod or Yellow Pod).
J. The stack is ready for operation from the Master Hydraulic Control Panel.
TC8081 2-8
IV. RETRIEVE THE POD
a. Turn off the air supply to the panel valves for the hydraulic pod
connectors (riser and stack).
B. Disconnect the Jumper hose from the reel of the pod to be retrieved.
A. The Pod Connectors Stack and the Pod Connectors Riser must be re-
tracted.
1. If the connectors have been extended, apply 2000 to 3000 psi hydrau-
lic pressure to control lines 31 and 34 at the reel.
3. After the connectors retract, reduce pressure from line 37, then re-
duce pressure from lines 31 and 34.
TC8081 2-9
C. Disconnect the jumper hose from the hose reel.

TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURE
I. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Turn the operating mode switch on the Master Control Panel to the
LOCAL position.
2. Operate the stack function from the Master control Panel on the Hy-
draulic Power Unit.
b. If the stack function does not operate properly, the problem is hy-
draulic. continue to the next step for the surface hydraulic system
troubleshooting procedure.
Important: Refer to the hydraulic flow diagrams while following the procedure.
1. Starting at the hose reel, trace the flow of hydraulic fluid through the
1" I.D. supply line, Using the process of elimination, check every loca-
tion between the hose reel and the surface accumulators where possi-
ble for the presence of hydraulic pressure. The cause of the problem
TC8081 4-3
will be between the point where pressure is present and the point
where pressure is absent.
b. If the cause of the problem is not present along the 1" I.D. supply
line, continue to the next step.
2. Starting at the panel valve for the stack function on the master Con-
trol panel, trace the flow of the hydraulic fluid through the 3/16" I.D.
pilot line. using the process of elimination, check every location be-
tween the panel valve and the hose reel where possible for the pres-
ence of hydraulic pressure. the cause of the problem will be between
the point where pressure is present and the point where pressure is
absent.
1. Retract the hydraulic connectors into the pod, and operate the func-
tion again.
b. If the function does not operate properly, the cause of the prob-
lem is in the pod. Continue to the next step.
3. Check to see that hydraulic pressure from the 1" I.D. supply line is
reaching the pod valve that controls the stack function.
a. If hydraulic pressure from the 1" I.D. supply line is not reaching the
pod valve, trace back from the pod valve until you find the cause.
TC8081 4-4
• If hydraulic pressure from the 1" I.D. supply line is reaching the
pod valve, continue to the next step.
4. Check to see that the correct pilot pressure is reaching the pod valve.
a. If the correct pilot pressure is not reaching the pod valve, trace
back from the valve to find the cause.
a. If the pod valve does not operte properly, continue to Paragraph III
to find the part number and the maintenance procedure.
7. Switch to the other pod by operating the selector valve on the Master
control Panel.
9. Trace the flow of hydraulic pressure between the pod valve and the
stack function.
