When in conflict, we must act in such a way that our opponent is also loved and called by God. 2 Leaders dont work in a vacuum there is much that surrounds them and what they do. This principle may well be called, pay attention to context. Life is messy, which means that things get complicated and sometimes there is just too much stuff on our plate. In these times, we must understand that everyone is coming from their own backgrounds. The experiences someone brings to the table will serve to color their understanding of the conflict. 3 Leaders make decisionsand take responsibility for them. This is a difficult principle in our congregational polity because we vote to determine our course of action. However, there are times when unilateral decisions must be made, whether they are in the circles or in worship. As leaders, we must take responsibility for our decisions and accept the results of our action. This does not mean that we cant change our minds, but it means we have to take care to make our decisions with the whole community in mind. 4 Leaders are relentlessly selfreflectiveno one else can do it for them. This is the last principle Ill mention here, though I 2

Greetings yall, Something I noticed Pentecost Sunday was how few people were willing to get up and recognize themselves as leaders of the church. The leadership of the church is not just the pastor, it is not just the chair of the different committees; the leadership of the church is the membership. How do I know this? Because I am the pastor of a Congregational style church. Our entire polity is based on the idea that the congregation has authority within the life of the church. It should be noted, however, that Christ is the head of the church. The congregation is the leadership of the church in regards to general working and policy of the church. So if the congregation is the leadership, what is leadership and what does it mean for how we work with others? First off, I define leadership as that which focuses on relating people to one another with the purpose of working with them to understand and address the (sometimes) complex issues in which all involved have something invested. These principles apply primarily to the church, but can be expanded to include any group including social clubs or families. 1 Leaders love and rely on Godand help others do the same. As Christians, we are all called to serve God. As leaders, we must recognize that we are working with

Parishable Items July 2011 have at least 5 more for any that are interested. In order to continue to be effective, we must be able to look back at our role in making decisions, guiding others and facilitating change. This generally isnt difficult in the church as we tend to have long memories. But something that many churches forget to do is learn from the past in order to influence the future. We get so caught up in the failure that we forget that we can evolve the idea into something stronger, or we get caught up in the success so much that we never want to change things again. These are just some of the ways that we should be acting and thinking as leaders. Remember that in this church, when I call for the leaders, everyone is able to stand and claim that role. If you claim to be a member of this church, you have a lot to live up to. Luckily, you wont do it alone. Your fellow members are also leaders and the head of the church, Jesus Christ, will be with you every step of the way. See you on Sun,

TRUSTEES MINUTES MAY 10, 2011 The Trustees met on

May 10, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. Those in attendance were Joel Bobb, Ben Heckart, Laurel Klopfenstein, Sylvia Harvey and Pastor Chad Savage. Minutes of the previous meeting were read. Laurel made a motion to accept them, Ben seconded, and the motion was carried. The Financial reports were reviewed. A motion was made by Ben and seconded by Laurel to

accept them; the motion carried. Reports: The Trustees would like to thank Plymouth Circle and Marvin & Kay Gingrich for their donations to the parsonage repair fund. It has been suggested that we look into the cost of a metal roof for the parsonage. We will be getting an estimate. The idea of having a dinner fund raiser for the parsonage repair fund was discussed. The cost for the replacement windows in the east door was $400.00 each. The Trustees feel that this is excessive, so we will be looking into purchasing steel doors. A letter from the pension fund stated that investment returns were much higher last quarter which will result in a one month premium credit. The parsonage repairs will be started by the end of summer. The project will be done by Gods Portion Day. Old business: A discussion was held about the feasibility of purchasing updates for the Church Windows Software. New Business: We will need another work day. It was decided to have this on June 26th after church. Church will be in the park followed by the first parsonage campaign dinner. Projects that need to be done are: edging in front, doors to east, painting of stripes in the parking lot and more, as time permits. More information will follow. The th next meeting will be June 14 at 8:00 p.m. Laurel made a motion to adjourn, Ben seconded it; the motion carried.
