CORROSION TEST
Purpose of Corrosion Test

Products or materials all around us will ultimately deteriorate under their end use environment and end
their service life. Corrosion tests are used to determine the service life of products or materials by
simulating and accelerating the natural corrosion process via incorporating various corrosion factors that
exist in the natural environment

Corrosion factors
Types of Corrosion Test Methods
1. Salt spray test

The most corrosion test methods that have been used around the world over a long period of time are
1. Neutral salt spray test (SST/NSST)
2. Acetic acid salt spray test (ASS)
3. Copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray test (CASS)
They are specified in JIS, ISO, ASTM and other standards.

Salt spray tests are widely performed for purpose such as quality control and corrosion resistance comparison.

Types of Corrosion Test Methods
2. Cyclic corrosion test
Cyclic corrosion test are designed to achieve greater correlation with outdoor exposure. After determine the
corrosion factors to product end use condition, test with those factors incorporated are repeatedly
performed. It is currently specified in JIS, JASO, ISO and other standard.

Conclusion
Materials deteriorate from the environment and other causes send to the corrosion. The corrosion damages to
appearance and structure of material. The corrosion damage affect to life of the material. To increase the life of
the material, it protects the surface of materials in various ways such as painting, plating, coating, anodizing etc.
Corrosion testing is required to evaluate the life of material and corrosion conditions.
The most commonly used test is “Salt Spray Test”.
