The Influence of IT on
Culture and Social
Behavior

➔ Technology and Culture

◆ Language, art, mobility, education, and religion
● vital parts of our civilizations that are impacted by " technology "
● A community's culture serves as a benchmark for perceiving, judging, and
evaluating technology.
● As technology affects all the components of culture, it determines the
direction of cultural development.
● Technology has a significant impact on everyday life and culture.
● Through people’s use of technology, technology has contributed to
shaping and differentiating cultures.
● Through the technology of art, values can be seen within a culture.
➔ Art
◆ is the culmination of cultivated technological skills by a person.
◆ The technology of art can be explained by scholar David Nye’s idea of how
technology is not just objects but skills.
➔ Technology
◆ shapes different cultures and differentiates one from another.
◆ Through the technology of computers and teleconferencing, a specialized learner
can access knowledge without leaving that person’s home.
◆ Technology does allow for every opportunity to be afforded but creates more
opportunities than in the past.
➔ In the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries
◆ technology and culture have significantly influenced one another. As cultures
change so does the technology they develop.
◆ developments in manufacturing, communications, and engineering, cultures have
been reshaped around the world by freeing people from small family farms by
choice or by force.
➔ 19th CENTURY
◆ The 19th century drastically influenced American culture. Corporations began to
manufacture goods that had previously been made in the home.
➔ 20th CENTURY
EHILLA - BSOT - U1A IT 101 - FINALS

◆ In the 20th century, agricultural technology pushed small farms out of business in
favor of larger industrialized corporate farms.
◆ The farmers in the periphery are now dependent upon the countries in the center
for seeds to which they used to have full access and the fertilizer and other
chemicals needed to grow the modified plant seeds.
➔ 21ST CENTURY
◆ 21st century with the popularity of big-box superstores that offer extremely low
prices on a wide variety of goods.
◆ farming became commercialized and industrialized, factories were able to
produce more goods, while small farms and businesses could no longer compete
with the technology used by larger companies.
◆ Without the technological skill of forming a democratic system and
communication devices, the democratization of education would not have
occurred.
● Says Kranzberg
○ A technical expert.
○ The foundation for a democratic society was laid by technology.
○ To demonstrate how education and school systems are organized,
as well as what culture and democratic values are.
● There is a symbiotic link that occurs between humans and technology.
Technology is alive if humans are alive.
● Our hands manipulate the blood that flows through our veins.
➔ SOCIAL BEHAVIOR
◆ The fact that technology has significantly altered our social behavior is cause for
alarm. Our technology addictions come at the expense of our social ideals,
interactions, commitments, and interactions. Increased use of technology has the
potential to cause social detachment, which can have both beneficial and bad
consequences for the development of social and relational skills.
➔ How does technology affect a person’s behavior?
◆ Data, gamification, and psychological tricks
● can persuade you to make healthier choices, work more, spend more
money, and do other things.
◆ Technology has the capacity to nudge you to think and act in precise ways at
specific moments, from push notifications and reminders to ratings and rewards
systems.
➔ What are the negative effects of technology?
◆ Eye strain and difficulties focusing on crucial tasks may be caused by social
media and mobile devices, which can lead to psychological and physical
problems.
◆ They may also play a role in more significant health issues including depression.
Overuse of technology may have a greater influence on teenagers in their
formative years.
➔ What are positive effects of technology?
EHILLA - BSOT - U1A IT 101 - FINALS

◆ Other ways that technology is perceived as having a good impact on society

include greater knowledge and understanding, advancements in industry and
jobs, and the globalization-induced interconnection of the world.
➔ What are some impacts of technology?
◆ Our sleeping patterns are influenced by technology
◆ We get isolated as a result of technology
◆ Technology encourages people to be more sedentary
◆ Technology is a source of perpetual distraction
◆ Neck pain and poor posture is caused by technology.
➔ Although technology has many benefits, such as improving daily life and allowing people
to take control of their mental health, it also leads to more offline interaction.
➔ Internet and mobile technology appear to be subtly destroying the meaningfulness of
interactions we have with others, disconnecting us from the world around us, and
resulting in an imminent sense of isolation in today's society.
➔ Based on the study conducted by Opera Mini in 2015, the Philippines is now dubbed the
"most social nation."
➔ With smartphones becoming cheaper and more accessible, people get to spend more
time online, wherever and whenever they want due to its mobility.
➔ "The many hundreds of small ways that technology alters our individual and collective
behavior on a daily basis add up to the cultural changes the technologists and historians
point to." -Charlie Gilkey (2015)

○ 5 COMMON PROBLEMS FACED BY STUDENTS IN
E-LEARNING AND HOW TO OVERCOME THEM BY SUNIL
KUMAR JULY 10, 2015
◆ Adaptability Struggle
● Switching from the traditional classroom and
face-to-face instructor training to computer-based
training in a virtual classroom makes the learning
experience entirely different for students. Their
resistance to change doesn't allow them to adapt to
the online learning environment, whereas it takes
time for them to get accustomed to Course
Management Systems (CMS) and the methods of
computer-based education.
◆ Technical Issues
● Many students are not provided with the high
bandwidth or the strong internet connection that
online courses require, and thus fail to catch up
with their virtual classmates: Their weak monitors
make it hard to follow the Course Management
EHILLA - BSOT - U1A IT 101 - FINALS

System and their learning experience becomes

problematic.
◆ Computer Literacy
● Although students are generally tech-savvy, and
thus able to manage computers well, lack of
computer literacy is a major issue among students
today. Many of them cannot operate basic
programs such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
and, therefore, are not able to handle their files.
◆ Time Management
● It is a difficult task for e-Leaners as online courses
require a lot of time and intensive work.
Furthermore, it is mostly adults who prefer
web-based learning programs for their place and
time flexibility they rarely have the time to take the
courses due to their various everyday
commitments.
◆ Self-Motivation
● Self-motivation is an e-Learning essential
requirement: however, many online learners lack it,
much to their surprise. After enrolling in distance
learning courses, many learners fall behind and
nurture the idea of giving up, as difficulties in
handling a technological medium also seem
insurmountable.
● BUSINESS
○ As previously discussed, some companies use adware to track
information about their customers for marketing purposes. You
might ask, how is that possible?
○ Adware
◆ is a program designed to display advertisements on your
computer, redirect your search requests to advertising
websites, and collect marketing-type data about
yourself-for example, the types of websites that you visit so
that customized advertisements can be displayed.
● HEALTH
○ Patient records are always kept confidential However, with the
introduction of technology, and with hospitals and clinics leaning
towards automation, patient records have shifted from paper to
digital.
○ According to the International Association of Privacy
Professionals, "a medical record is more valuable than a credit
card on the black market. According to the World Privacy Forum, a
medical record, including a name, address, Social Security

number, and health ID number, typically goes for $50 on the online
black market (whereas an active credit card sells for just $3." This
makes it more lucrative for cybercriminals as patient data
becomes digital.
○ In the Philippines, hospitals are required to comply with the Data
Privacy Act (DPA) of 2012 and implement data protection
measures in their data processing systems to protect the
confidentiality of their patient's personal information and medical
records. Violations of data privacy involve penalties. Under the
DPA the penalty for unauthorized disclosure of personal
information is P1 million. The penalty extends to P2 million if the
act involves sensitive personal information
○ In the United States, the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) in 1996 was designed to promote the
confidentiality and portability of patient records, as well as to
develop data security standards for consistency in the healthcare
industry The HIPAA Security Rule establishes national standards
to protect individuals' electronic personal health information that is
created, received, used, or maintained by a covered entity
