Windlasses, capstans and chain stoppers

A capstan is a mechanical device used mainly on board ships or in shipyards for

moving heavy weights by means of ropes, cables, or chains. A capstan consists of a
drum, driven either manually or by steam or electricity that rotates about a vertical axis
to wind in a line wrapped around it.
A windlass is a device that functions very similarly to a capstan, but instead of
featuring a vertical barrel, the windlass will feature a horizontal pulley or barrel. These
devices are often used for the same purposes in different applications as well.
The chain stopper or anchor lock is a fail safe to prevent anchor free fall at any
point while the anchor is in the raised position. Any boat using a windlass should also
be equipped with a chain stopper.

The maintenance and lubrication of heavy deck equipment (such as winches, cranes, and anchor windlasses) are performed b
