1.

Specify at least FOUR auxiliary systems of the vessel using hydraulics

Ans= 1. Steering gears.

2. operating cranes.

3. operating hatch covers

4. winches and windlass.

2. Referring to figure below identify the numbered components and explain their
function(s)

Ans= 1. hydraulic tank - stores a hydraulic oil of the system

2. hydraulic pump - driven by electric motor. Converts electrical energy into fluid
pressure by using an electric motor.

3. Hydraulic accumulator - used to maintain pressure, store and recapture energy,

reduce pressure peaks, power chassis suspensions, and dampen shock, vibration,
and pulsations.

4. Pressure relief valve - control pressure in a system.

5. DCV 3/4 - allow hydraulic oil flow into different paths of actuator thereby to
control their mechanical motion.

6. Double acting cylinder - an actuator is a device that uses a form of power to

convert a control signal into mechanical linear motion.

3. State the operating range of oil pressure in hydraulic systems on board ship.

Ans= Varies from 175 bars to 700 bars (254psi - 10,150psi)

4. Scenario: Your vessel planned to take fuel from bunker barge. According to
ship's bunkering procedures a meeting should be held prior to take a bunker:
Indicate at least FIVE points that need to be considered and discussed at this
meeting

Ans= 1. Which tanks are to be fulled.

2. sequence order of tanks to be filled.

3. How much bunker is to be taken.

4. emergency procedure in case of oil spill.

5. responsibilities of each officer are explained.

6. Explain the term "Cappuccino effect" when bunkering a ship

Ans= Its when the bunker supply barge introduces air into the supply line during
and or after bunkering operations, which results in leads to the development of froth
and foam on the surface of the bunker in the bunker tanks of the receiving vessel.

7. With reference to the ship’s Lifting gears

State the safety checks needed before using EACH of following:
1. Wire strops
2. Chain blocks
3.Eye bolts

Ans= 1. Wire strips - Do not use in case of defects: illegal markings. Distorted, worn,
or damaged fittings. Broken or cut wires. Kinks, protrusion of core. Corrosion, heat
damage or discoloration. Signs of movement at splices and ferrules.

2. Chain blocks - Do not use in case of defects: wear, damage to trolley, hooks, and
fittings. Damaged or distorted slack and anchor, chains worn, bent, notched,
stretched, corroded. Do not hang freely, twist or jump, load slips or will not lift;
damaged block casing, illegible unreadable markings.
3. Do not use in case of defects: illegible markings; distortion, worn, or bent shanks
and threads incomplete or incorrectly formed threads. Damaged eyes, nicks, gauges,
cracks, corrosion, or other defects.

8. Referring to the figure below, identify the components numbered 8,9,10,11,12 and
13 and explain their function.

Ans= 8. Screen Filter - Fits into primary chamber. It helps in removing the non-
sewage component such as paper, other solids which can clog the complete system

9. Biofilter demister - The aeration chamber is separated by Biofilter (Demister) which

treats the sewage passing through it.

10. Air Blower diffuser (10): There are usually 2 air blowers installed. In which one
acts as stand-by. The air is forced through the diffuser into aeration chamber with
pressure 0.3-0.4 bars which plays an important role in decomposition of the sewage.

Usually, three float sensors (11, 12 and 13) are fitted to collection chamber. high
level (alarm) switch (13) and two-level switches (11 &12) to control the discharge
pumps 15.

9. With reference to the Incinerator

Briefly explain why an incinerator is installed on board a ship (2 Points)

Ans= The incineration of liquid and solid waste is one of the most environmentally
friendly methods or waste management in the marine and offshore industry.

11. With reference to incineration process, explain the importance of the combustion
temperature and indicate the temperature range.
Ans= During incineration, it is important to control the exhaust temperature, which
should not less 600°C, because thermal destruction of most organic compounds
occurs between 590°C and 650°C.

12. Referring to figure below, identify the equipment and briefly describe its
function(s)

Ans= Anchor windlass

A windlass is a mechanical device are used on out and heave-up ship's anchor at the
time of usually located near the foredeck.

13. Referring to figure below, identify the equipment and briefly describe its
function(s)

Ans= Winch its necessary deck equipment for the ship, which can he used for ship
mooring, towing and cargo lifting.

14. Referring to figure below, identify the equipment and briefly describe its
function(s)

Ans= Deck cranes

Deck cranes can be used for ports without special lifting facilities, for example
container handling facilities.

Deck cranes require less time to prepare for working cargo than derricks and have
the advantage of being able to accurately place (or spot) cargo in the hold.

15. Referring to figure below, identify the equipment and briefly describe its
function(s)

Ans= Folding hatch covers

Hatch covers in an open position they provide access to the hold for loading and
discharging cargo in the closed position they seal the hatchway in a weathertight
manner. Form functional cargo areas and can carry various deck cargoes.
16. Name the International Convention that regulates the prevention of oil pollution
at sea

Ans= The international Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships
(MARPOL) is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of
the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.

18. State the legal document that is required to comply with the convention
mentioned in Q. 16

Ans= All cargo vessels where MARPOL Convention is applicable must have an oil
record book in which the officer responsible will record all oil or sludge transfers and
discharges within the vessel.

19. Referring to the figure, identify the components numbered 3, 5, 6 and 8 and also
explain their function in this system.

Ans= the thrust block (3); is situated just aft of the main engine and its purpose is to
transmit the thrust produced by the rotating propeller and shaft down into the ship's
structure.

Shaft intermediate support bearing (5); it is supporting bearing of the propeller shaft,
supports shaft radial load and ensures smooth rotation

Stern tube (6): it forms the after bearing for the propeller shaft allows the tail shaft to
rotate smoothly and consists front and aft sealings to make watertight joint/gland
where the shaft passes through the hull

S. Tube high gravity tank (8), Store stern tube lubrication oil that circulates to
lubricate and cool the stern tube bearings. And, to protect against the ingress of sea
water since the oil pressure in the pipe is higher than the static pressure of sea water.
