INTRODUCTION: -
An annotated bibliography provides a brief account of the available research on a given topic. It
is a list of research sources That includes concise descriptions and evaluation of each source. The
annotation usually contains a brief summary of content and a short analysis or evaluation.
An annotated bibliography may be component of a larger project or it may be a standalone
assignment. While an annotation can be as brief as one sentence, the standard annotated
bibliography consists of citation followed by a short paragraph.

DEFINITION: - An annotated bibliography that gives a summary of each of the entries. The
purpose of annotations is to provide the reader with a summary and an evaluation of the source.
Each summary should be a concise exposition of the source’s central ideas and give the reader a
general idea of the source’s content.

PURPOSE OF AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: -

 Review the literature of a particular subject.
 Demonstrate the quality and depth of reading.
 Exemplify the scope of sources available- such as journals, books, web sites, and
magazine articles.
 Highlight sources that may be of interest to other readers and researchers.
 Explore and organize sources for further research.

STYLE OF WRITING: -
An annotated bibliography is a piece of formal academic writing and follows the general rules for
all academic writing:
Arrange in alphabetical order
Write in a SINGLE paragraph (usually about 100-300words, depending on the format but
check with your lecturer)
Write in full sentences using academic writing style
Use transition words (e.g., furthermore, moreover, however, therefore….)
Be concise- mention only significant details in your summary
Use examples from other annotated bibliographies to guide and check your writing style
Do not repeat information (e.g., title) that is already in your citation
Do not cross references i.e., Use any in-text references as you are only writing about a
single text.

Bond, G.R. (2002). ‘Assertive Community Treatment for People with Severe Mental Illness.’
Journal of Mental Health, 2(3), 34-59.

In this article, Gary defines Assertive community treatment, ACT, as one of the approaches that can
be used to deal with mental illnesses. Schizophrenia is one of the serious mental illnesses. Gary
argues that AGT is the best way to organize services and provide essential support for mentally ill
individuals. He advocates for community integration together with the clients having conditions
such as schizophrenia. ACT is seen by the author as a holistic approach as it will result in provision
of medicine, finances, housing, and any other need.

The author also gives a review of the current position of health diseases, and especially mental
illnesses such as schizophrenia. The major requirements for an effective ACT team are to integrate
staffing operations and integration of services. Monitoring and medication on daily basis is also
needed to help the individual. This journal article informs the reader how to cope with mental
illnesses and the necessary procedures. This approach can effectively work to treat someone
suffering from schizophrenia.

Doweswell T, Thornton JG, Hewison J, Lilford RJL. Should there be a trial of home versus
hospital delivery in the United Kingdom? Measuring outcomes other than safety is feasible.
BMJ 1996 ; 312: 753-757.

The authors of this small study suggested that conducting a trial to assess birth outcome randomized
according to birth place (home versus hospital) would be feasible. Eleven subjects were recruited
from pregnant women who met the eligibility criteria for a home birth. This ratio indicated that a
largest scale trial may be possible. The following outcomes were measured, following an intention
to treat analysis, mode of delivery, obstetrical interventions, complications, and infant feeding.
However, the authors note that mortality is not an appropriate outcome variable to assess the safety
of home birth with a randomized controlled trial because the extremely large number of subjects
required to compare rare outcomes would not be possible.

Pais M, Devi E, Mudaliar V, Lewis L, George A, Sreenath S, Bairy KL. Neonatal sepsis,
Bacterial Isolate& Antibiotic Susceptibility among Neonates. The Nursing Journal of India
2012 Feb; III(1): 18-20.

Neonatal sepsis is one of the commonest causes of neonatal mortality in India. Around 85% of new
born are exposed to infection within 24 hours after birth, among which 5% are trapped with
neonatal sepsis. Group- B streptococcus, Haemophilus, Influenzae, and Listeria Monocytes are the
positive organism of neonatal sepsis in most of cases. However, the study was focused on the
neonatal sepsis among the neonates admitted NICU. Data from 96 neonates were taken and
analysed during 2007-2009. The sign. symptoms, susceptibility pattern of antibiotics used were the
components of data. The interpretation after study was very alarming to all. It was found that
despite of huge modern technique, 25% of affected new born die every year. Death rate is high in
case of preterm and low birth weight babies, In a large proportion of cases, microbes are coming
from maternal side due to poor maternal care. The time taken by the care giver to start proper
antibiotic therapy is another cause of fatality. So, if proper emphasis can be given on maternal care
and early diagnosis & treatment, we can com bat neonatal sepsis.

Sample 4:

Tandon, R. et al. (2006). ‘Best practice pharmacologic treatment of schizophrenia: applying

principles of evidence-based medicine.’ Current psychosis and therapeutic reports. 3(2), 53-
60.

The authors of the article begin by introducing the reader to the condition and how it has remained a
serious issue affecting man today. Clinicians tend to find themselves in very hard situations when
they have to make decisions on how to treat the condition. The best method, according to them, is to
access individual information and apply specific treatment that best suits the individual.

The main issue in this article is that the best approach is to apply an evidence-based medicine. The
major steps to be used have also been outlined. This will help in treating individuals suffering from
schizophrenia by using the available pharmacologic treatments. This article is thus very significant
in the treatment of the mental condition.

Varsha K. Assessing the Knowledge and Effect of Planned Teaching Regarding Breast Cancer
and Breast Self –Examination (BSE) Perimenopausal Women in Selected Urban Community
of Mumbai. The Nursing Journal of India 2016 Jan- Feb; VII (1): 8-11.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1,93,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed every
year with an estimated 40,000 deaths. It is thus very important that women themselves are made aware
about the importance of breast self – examination, which is possible through adequate information
and motivation by the health care provider itself. With the promise that the incidence of breast
cancer is preventable and curable with proper awareness through nurses, an evaluator approach pre-
test post-test study involving perimenopausal women was undertaken. The findings proved that
planned teaching can improve the knowledge of the women to a great extent and improve the
practice of breast self- examination. Thus, it is possible to reduce the breast cancer related mortality
and morbidity rate through self –examination of breast.
