Case Study: Redesigning SBI Net Banking

Overview

We’ve been a regular user of SBI for the past two years and have always

found it challenging to log in to SBI net banking. The whole experience of

utilizing an internet banking system is not only time-consuming because of

several stages of authentication but also complicated due to the abundance

of numbers and functionality. With the goal of having an easy-to-use

interface, the website generally ignores platform conventions, resulting in

confusing interactions. Most banking systems are still based on old

technology. That’s when we wonder, Why don’t we try to make the login

experience to SBI net banking easier for the users.

Constraints

While we were already using SBI online banking, we chose to stick to their

design ideology, UI patterns, and ensure that their feature finds a logical

place inside their information architecture.

Designing process

My assumptions and thought process

We needed to start with some key points and then proceed from there. So

we began by making a few assumptions, such as:

● Who finds it most annoying to log in? — Probably someone who

is constrained on time and finds it difficult to go through several

stages of authentication.

● This might suggest that most are working professionals, students,

or who are tech-literate enough to use at least two of Google,

Facebook, or Gmail.

● This may also indicate that they would be more mindful of their

time. Also helping them in acquiring a simple and quick login

process.
● The key would be to rebuild a login experience with an easy-to-

use interface that is not confusing, hassle-free, and provides good

UX.

Explore: Main issues in the current website

There are several pages in the login procedure, each with its own set of

problems. To log in on the present site, you must complete the following 5

steps:
We tried to address some of the challenges that a user may encounter on

each page of the SBI net banking login process.

On Home page:
● The page is overly cluttered, As there is a lot of information on a

page, it can be difficult for a new user to process all.

● At first glance, the “Net banking” option is hard to locate.

On Banking type page:

● “Personal banking” is written in different colors which is confusing.

● “Personal banking” is hypertext that directs to an outdated

website. The information that changes color and old-style moving

ads are irritating

On Personal banking page:

● There is information from earlier pages that are repeated.

● There is a lack of white space

On Login form page:

● The login and reset buttons are both confusing.

● Instructions are hidden at the bottom of the page and one needs

to scroll down the page for these instructions.

● The virtual keyboard button is placed off-focus.

● The moving red text information is distracting.

● The overall page is cluttered and out of date.

Overall, the website is clumsy and full of repetitive and clustered

information, in which many important details are neglected by the users.

During the login process, there are a total of five steps, which is an

annoying process for the user and the page being outdated.

Research: Ideating solution

After going over the major difficulties, we will be able to work on a variety of

issues to improve the website’s UX. The design goals are to reduce

confusion by making the space less crowded, avoid unnecessary and

repetitive information, and save time by eliminating unnecessary steps.

Solution:

The following are the design goals we set for ourself.

Redesign

The home page: The home page is now less cluttered and clearer, and the

“Net banking” button is relatively easy to find.

The Banking type and Personal banking page: We merge both the
pages into the dropdown menu for saving some steps and time.
The login page: We made the important instruction more visible and the
input procedure more straightforward and controllable.

The verifying page:

The path to the login page consists of five pages, two of which can be

deleted entirely. So we started by redesigning the login form page, then

added a link to the login page from the home page

Conclusion:
This was our first attempt at web design. This project allowed us to obtain

new insights and ideas, all of which contributed to the project’s betterment.

It was a wonderful learning opportunity.

Key takeaways

● The significance of design systems. It ensures that work is

completed in a timely and uniform manner.

● Takes pauses to identify errors and continues to iterate more and

more.

● We spend time-solving the problem on my own as it teaches us

how to think, and when we get stuck, we talk to someone

experienced.
