1. SCOPE
This standard defines the engineering practices to be used for instrument numbering
on P&ID’s, IFD’s construction drawings, instrumentation system diagrams, block
diagrams, functional descriptions, etc.
General Note: Instrumentation included within a third party supplied package shall
follow the same tagging criteria with suffix “X”.
2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
For cases not covered by this standard, the standard ANSI/ISA 5.1-2009
Instrumentation Symbols and Identification shall be used.
Symbols, letters and numbers described in this document are a combination of past
practices and the standards set forth by the International Society of Automation codes.
This chapter is not applicable for Telecommunication Systems and Structured Cabling
System.
The tag number structure is subdivided into five identification parts and shall be as
follows:
PFFFFF-NNNNNSSS
Note 1: Suffix “A/B/C” etc. shall be used for redundant instruments with the same
service or redundant process parts (e.g.: redundant transmitters for 1oo2,
2oo2, 2oo3 arrangements; Redundant process arrangements, etc.). In case
both redundant instrument and redundant process arrangement are
present, the first suffix shall be for process arrangement and the second for
instrumentation arrangement (e.g. AA/AB/AC… and BA/BB/BC...).
Suffix "L" shall be used for loose items in field (not panel mounted), in
addition to “A/B/C” etc. (e.g.: transmitters with indication in control system
and repetition in field, local, etc.).
Example:

The following criteria have been set for the instrument linked to certain equipment,
such as motors and control valves, and in order to keep the uniqueness of the
instrument tag and to have a direct relationship between equipment and instrument
identification number.
All limit switches and solenoid valves installed on the same instrument item shall keep
the same process variable code and progressive number.
Example:
MFFFFF-NNNNNSSS
Examples:
it is specifically furnished or outside the extent of the agreed upon right of use.
Motor operated valves related signals shall follow the General Tag Number Structure,
with “M” (motor) as Initiating Variable.
Example:
The tag and loop number structures are equal for the instrumentation.
Refer to the following Table for instrument type applicable to Fire & Gas Detection
System.
Table 2
The Loop number structure is subdivided into four identification parts and shall be as
follows:
LL-NNNNNSSS
The unit number, numeric part and suffix shall be the same of the associated tag
numbers.
The loop type shall be in general one digit equal to the type of measurement code, the
second digit shall be used for specific project needs (grouping or sorting of certain
instrument typologies such as thermal relief valves, level gauges, etc.).
Examples:
The outdoor equipment (Junction Boxes and Local Panels) tag number structure shall
be as follows:

Single cables connecting field instruments with junction boxes or local panels shall
have the same tag as the instrument itself. The same tagging criteria shall be applied
for field instruments directly connected to indoor instrumentation equipment.
Suffix "A/B/C" shall be added in case more than one cable is required for a single
instrument.
Example:
UUU-MF-NNN-SS
Note 1: Suffix "A/B/C" etc. shall be used for in case more than one cable is required
for single outdoor equipment.
Note 2: Progressive number of multicable will generally be the same of relevant
junction box.
Example:
F Description
A Alarm signal
B Interlock Signal
D Digital signal (both alarm and Interlock)
E Electronic analog signals
F Frequency/Pulse signal
G Fire/Gas detection
L Data Link, Fieldbus
P Power supply
R Thermo Resistances
S Solenoid valves, digital output contact
T Thermocouples
If one or more cables are directly connected to a local panel, without junction box, it
shall be numbered with the same criteria, but the “following number” and the suffix shall
be replaced by local panel tag itself. i.e. 001-LT-002, 001-LP-001A, using suffixes as
progressive.
