TECTURE NOTES ON SYMMETRY (MATHEMATTCS-B)

Symmetry

7. Line of symmetly
The line of symmetry of a figure is a line in the figure such that the opposite sides of the figure

are reflections of each other in this line.

r Example: A rectangle has two lines of symmetry while a parallelogram has no lines of symmetry
t____ I

2. Rotdtional syrmmetry
lf a figure can be rotated about a point through an angle other than 360o, without changing its
original position, the figure is said to have rototional symmetry obout the point.

The order ofrototional symmetry of o figure is the number of times the figure can be rotated
without changing its original position.
r---- -------'1
r Example: An equilateraltriangle has a rotational symmetry of order 3
r----i
r

lf a figure can only be rotated through 360' without changing its original position, the order of
rotational symmetry is 1 and the figure has no rotational symmetry.
