3.2 Packing
The valves are generally delivered in europallets, alternatively, in dedicated high thickness paper
boxes. In both cases, they are fastened to the pallet using bolts and covered with a polyethylene
heat-shrinking film. The package depends on the valve dimensions and on the actuator and/or
hydraulic circuit that may be installed on the valve. The package depends on the valve dimensions
and on the hydraulic circuit dimensions.

8. Principle of operation
The water-hammer preventing valve is an automatic control valve designed to protect pumping
systems from over-pressure waves generated by sudden speed changes that occur when the
pumps shut down. When a sudden abnormal shut down of the pump (e.g. power cut off) occurs
downstream from the pump the pressure suddenly drops due to flow inertia and then increases
(even highly) above the static pressure (water hammer). The pilot system of the preventing valve
uses the initial pressure drop to control the opening of the main valve. In the next stage the pressure
increases in the main valve (which is open) and can’t reach excessive values, but the water hammer
preventing valve discharges this excessive pressure into the atmosphere. In the normally functions
of pumping system the main valve shuts hermetically and also maintains the relief function with the
pressure set parameter (that can be amply adjusted).
9. Installation
• Leave appropriate space to facilitate the assembling/dismantling and maintenance operations.
• Before the installation, wash the pipes properly to eliminate any residual. Not washing the
pipes properly can compromise the valve functioning.
• Install a resilient seat gate valves upstream and downstream the valve in order to facilitate
maintenance operations.
• Install the valve on the pipeline, checking the arrow printed on the valve must follow the water
flow. Use the eyelet on the cover to lift or lower the valve.
• The valve should be installed in a horizontal position with the cover up; other positions are also
possible but must be verified with our Technical Office.
• Make sure the valve position permits to easily dismantle the hydraulic circuit or its components.
• After the installation, check there are not damages to any joint, pipe or tools.

12. Maintenance
The quality of the material used to manufacture our valves and control circuits avoids abnormal
wear of the internal components for many years. However, we recommend checking the valve as
follows:
NOTE: Clean the strainer regularly following the specific timetable of the plant. This timetable
cannot be predetermined but must be decided only when the valve is on duty.
This kind of check allows scheduling the maintenance required by the valve, taking into account
the real working conditions.

13. Commissioning
HIGH SET PRESSURE
WARNING! Make sure that there is enough pressure upstream to adjust the pilot, by starting up
a pump or opening some upstream gate valves.
1. Shut the main valve by shutting ball valves 11 - 12 and opening ball valves 1 - 2 - 4 - 14.
2. The needle valves are not factory-calibrated. To reduce the shutting speed of the main valve
turn the needle valves 5 - 6 clockwise, and vice versa to increase it.
3. Turn the adjustment screw on the pilot valve 9 clockwise until the adjustment screw is fully
locked; fully turn the adjustment screw of the pilot 10 counter-clockwise until the spring is
relieved. Open ball valves 11 - 12: the main valve will stay shut if the upstream pressure is
less than the maxi mum pressure set of the pilot 9 and higher than the minimum pressure
set of the pilot 10.
NOTE: If the pressure is less than the minimum pressure set of the pilot 10, shut ball valve 12.
At this point the main valve will stay shut.
4. To adjust the relief pressure pilot proceed as follows:
4.1. Slowly turn the adjustment screw on the pilot 9 counter-clockwise until the main valve
starts to open. Continue to turn the adjustment screw slowly, stopping every half turn to enable
the valve to react. Choose the upstream pressure required by referring to the indications on the
pressure gauge located on the valve. Tighten the lock nut on the adjustment screw.
4.2. Check if the valve operates properly. Increasing the upstream pressure higher than the
parameter set should make the valve open; vice versa the lowering should make it shut.

THE VALVE a. The spring of the of the pilot 9 is a. Turn the adjustment screw on the
DOES NOT OPEN compressed excessively. pilot 9 counter-clockwise until the valve
opens.
b. The spring of the of the pilot 10 is not b. Turn the adjustment screw on the

The principal valve diaphragm leaks. Close the ball valves 4 - 14 and remove
the plug from the cover or close the ball
valves 1 - 11 - 12. If the diaphragm
continues leaking it must be substituted
because it has been damaged.
BE CAREFUL! The valve will open
