Data Science Project

Learning Objectives:

Follow the data science process to plan, implement, analyse and present your own research.

For this project, in pairs or in a group of 3, you will:

● Formulate statistical investigative question(s) (relating to International

School Twente or the IST broader community)
○ Formulate your questions as hypotheses so that they can be
investigated as for a hypothesis test design.
○ You must have a Null Hypothesis and an Alternate Hypothesis to
investigate for your study
○ See here for more examples:
https://www.thoughtco.com/definition-of-null-hypothesis-and-exam
ples-605436
● Design a study to test your hypothesis
● Develop strategies to collect and organize data of various types and
from various sources (including thinking about how your sample
relates to your total population).
● Develop ways to represent and interrogate data to notice, describe
and analyze patterns
● Recognize variability and use technology to develop models that
incorporate statistical measures
● Decide which key results to include in a data report that answers the
statistical investigative question, paying particular attention to what
conclusions are supported by the data.
● Communicate your results during a short presentation to the class
through, for example, a data visual, a poster, a video, a data story
Grading:

Expected Points

Investigative Question / Hypothesis Clearly state a null and alternative hypothesis that you want to 3
investigate. (Or more than one?)

Data Collection Describe your population, your sampling method and how you will collect 4
your data.

Model and Data Analysis Explain your model / hypothesis, and how this influences your choice of 6
data analysis methods. Show all relevant calculations and results.
Calculations can be in the form of an excel spreadsheet or a CODAP file.

Visualisation and Representation Use appropriate visualisations to illustrate your results. If appropriate, 6
test the significance of your results or calculate the uncertainty.
E.g. standard deviation for monovariate data or Pearson’s coefficient for
linearly correlated bivariate data.

Presentation of Results Give a 5 -7 minute presentation to the class (Date to be decided) 6

describing your project, and justifying your analysis and conclusions.
The presentation must be part of the final work handed in.

Analysis of limitations / concerns Describe any limitations or ethical considerations that you encountered. 5
Explain how the results of your investigation benefit you or the school.

Project Document / File The final project should be clearly readable. It should have a logical 5
structure of introduction, body and conclusion. It should contain all of the
sections listed above, and tie them together to form a cohesive
document.
Note that all sources must be correctly cited.
