III. GRADING RUBRICS For Essay

Rizal believed that national consciousness was essential for the development of a strong, unified Filipino nation. He knew that many Filipinos were not only uneducated but also
lacked an appreciation for their own history and culture. If they were not aware of their own heritage and traditions, they could not appreciate the importance of these things in
helping to create a strong national identity and culture. Therefore, he advocated for an education system that would foster this consciousness among the people.

While focusing most of the blame on Spain, Jose Rizal thought that the Filipinos are also to blame for unconsciously accepting their rule. He proposed the development of
National Consciousness as a solution to the indolence of the people. Rizal felt it was important to start by dispelling the Spanish colonizers' stereotype that Filipinos are lazy by nature.
They lacked guts and the ability to associate with their fellowmen, which is why they were unable to reject the idea in the first place. The people of the Philippines lacked a sense of
national identity prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. As claimed by Rizal, “A man in the Philippines is only an individual; he is not a member of a nation. He is deprived of the right
of association and therefore he is weak and inert”. Rejecting the idea would require the nation to continuously oppose the illegal colonial policies and overcome the forced
backwardness and stagnancy imposed by Spain. The importance of national consciousness is stressed as the spirit of cooperation and joint resistance to oppression that advances the
wellbeing of the nation and its citizens. According to Rizal, the idea was to defy colonial rule by using the nation's independence to take independent action. Unfortunately, Rizal
thought that only a select few were aware of this National Consciousness, which is why he felt the need to inspire the Filipino people to fight together in unison.
