ESSAY: Women and Science

1. What is Science? Is domestic science a science? Are the kinds of domestic jobs that women
have traditionally carried out science?

Science is knowledge gained by systematic and logical study in any branches of physical,
chemical or natural sciences which gained through observation and experimentation as facts or
principles of hypothesis or to open up new areas of knowledge. Science is the pursuit and
application of knowledge and understanding of natural and social world following a systematic
methodology based on evidence. It is the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the
systematic study of structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through
observation and experiment. Domestic Science was known as alternatively to Home Economics,
family resources and consumer sciences. It covers both the influence of science and technology
on women's work in the home particularly the introduction of "labor-saving devices".

We could say that domestic science was a science because it's movement attemptedly to apply
scientific principles and discoveries which only can be seen and rightfully inlined in the Science
perspective and doings. Another aspect was because domestic science movement shares same
root with the ecology movement, additional relevant works may be found in the section of
natural, biological and life. Some material on nutrition is cited also in the chemistry section
which technically based and naturally defined as the branches of Science.

We could also say that the kinds of domestic jobs that women traditionally carried out science
because as mention above about the movements or principles of domestic science which
applied by scientific process or aspects and discoveries to labor. It shares some roots of
ecology, natural, biology, life sciences and ofcourse chemistry which in the first place defined as
one of the branches of science. We all know that domestic science is a study of household skills
such as cooking or sewing, especially home economics which taught at the school. In summary,
it involved the movement and principles of scientific based and perspective. No doubt that

domestic science is a science and the kinds of domestic jobs within it was traditionally carried
out through science itself.

2. Try to get the students to explore both issues of what counts as science as well as the
reasons why women scientist have not been visible.

Science is one of the most crucial and critical respective field in society. It takes a hardwork and
determination to acknowledge and create name on this field. Critical thinking and solid proof
knowledge was badly needed in order to catch up and follow into this field. People who wants
to pursue this fields needs to gather a strong determination and self-confidence just to create a
good name and reputation. Scientist tend to do an arm-to-arm battle just to prove their worth,
skills and theory in order for them to be honored, acknowledged and gained respect. Science
has no way out if the standards, rules and expectation of the society interfere. Science cannot
change the original standard of our society. The current norms and state of the society lingers
too in Science. Now and then, woman seek to claim their place in our society. They tend to fight
in the undying battle between their place and worth against the living standards and norms of
society. They fought even from the start not only to seek their place but also to prove their
skills and self-worth. Reality hurts as they always says because the battle of every women
against the society continous in the field of Science. They not only suffered humiliation,
discrimination and stereotyping inside the society but also in the field of Science. Usually,
women scientist are not visible to eyes of the crowd. Credits and acknowledgement are least
for them. Even though they are good and has many contribution in the progress of this field but
lend only for them to be not seen and not visible. Men tend to dominate in the field of science.
They play the greatest role, for being a good model and having a strong resemblance but
women scientist recieved the other treatment. As I ask to students regarding on this issye, their
statement and views are the same too. Men scientist are usually does in the goos spot, having a
perfect place and power, gaining acknowledgement and respect while women scientist serve as
the latter. Gender biased and streotyping are ruling in Science too and still today, women
experiencing diffuclty to get what is equal and right for them.
