Chapter 3 – Activity 2

Explain the following question below. You can cite specific example to support your arguments.

Do the Philippines really have a Total Sovereignty?

After obtaining independence from the colonial rulers, it became clear that certain of the

colonial masters’ impact in our political, economic and cultural aspects lingered. Some have

emphasized the Filipinos’ compliance with our government, of which just a few are obedient or

cooperative with our own administration. And it is for the reason that the Philippine’s

sovereignty has been questioned up until now. Although this circumstances is on air, I still

believed that our country-the Philippines has its total sovereignty. Let me give you two examples

that will prove that the Philippines has its own sovereignty.

First example, is based from the Article I of the 1987 Philippine Constitution which

provided a strong presence of sovereignty in our country’s territory and says, “The national

territory comprises the Philippine archipelago, with all the islands and waters embraced therein,

and all other territories over which the Philippines has sovereignty or jurisdiction, consisting of

its terrestrial, fluvial and aerial domains, including its territorial sea, the seabed, the subsoil, the

insular shelves, and other submarine areas. The waters around, between, and connecting the

islands of the archipelago, regardless of their breadth and dimensions, form part of the internal

waters of the Philippines”.

Another example is based from the Article II, Section 1 of the Declaration of Principles

which says that the Philippines is a democratic and republican State and that sovereignty

resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them. This demonstrates that

while Filipino citizens have the right to intervene with the government, the government also has

the authority to impose regulations on them that they must follow to maintain the country’s

peace and order.
