ANALYSIS OF GENDER EQUALITY IN THE PHILIPPINES

Title

According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2020 of the World Economic Forum, the
Philippines remains one of the top countries in Asia in terms of closing gender gap. The
Gender Gap Report measured countries on their progress towards gender parity in four
dimensions: Economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment health and
survival, and political empowerment.

Do you agree with these? Does gender equality exist in the Philippines?

Write an essay about the status/ situation of Gender Equality in the Philippines, including
gender problems and issues and proposed law to eliminate gender inequality. What will be
your suggestion in eliminating gender gap in the country?

Economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment health and survival, and
political empowerment truly measures and contributes in gender gap or equality here in the
Philippines.

Gender equality really do exist here in our country but depending on the situations. Yes,
gender equality can be seen but not all the times. Some places or situations here in our
country violates gender equality. There are still circumstances showing gender
discrimination and gender stereotyping. Evidences of these dilemma shows in different
researches that has been conducted here in our country. For example, "While our country
boasts of being one of the most gender-equal countries in the world for the past years, the most
recent Global Gender Gap Index of the World Economic Forum shows the Philippines slipping three
spots from 7th place. The country still remains in the top 10, but the worsening performance has
been due to the wage inequality for similar work carried out. "The Philippine Institute for
Development Studies also states that even when unemployment rates dropped more rapidly for
women than for men, authors of the study highlight that unemployment rate is not always reflective
of the working conditions of women, especially since it can make it seem that “women in the
Philippines who join the labor force have similar economic opportunities as men.”

Though there are group of sectors that accept gender differences - physically, emotionally nor
spiritually but some also doesn't. There are still instances which societal norms and societal
standards comes first, specially those religious groups or those who follows traditional views. We
can't deny the fact that our country facing difficulty in achieving hundred percent positive result in
gender equality. It can be seen also in the report by HR in Asia, wherein it was found that 76 percent
of female respondents in the Philippines deal with inequality and prejudice in the workplace, with 17
percent admitting to being questioned about their desire to have a family during the interview
process. These facts compounded by political leaders who have blatantly vilified women, such as
President Duterte previously saying that there are things women can’t do and jobs women can’t take
on which fueled more women’s groups and women’s initiatives that push back. And Edukasyon’s
newly launched campaign seems to be one of the several additions to the gradual strengthening of
the women’s movement in the country.

Though there are laws and programs that promotes and advocates gender equality still does not
enough to eliminate gender discrimination. Yes, laws and different programs which advocates
gender equality contributes a lot in promoting gender equality. In my opinion, our government
official must doubl their effort and improved their service to achieve more gender equality here in
our country. They should be the number one promoter, supporter and protecter of gender equality
not it's enemy. For all of us, in order to eliminate gender gap, we must be an open-minded in
accepting each differences. We must accept the reality together with the modee changes, people
changes too and it is the effect of modernization. Respect and deep understanding is the key.
Instead of bringing them down, we must lift them up. In fact, the member of these group are those
who has a great contribution in the progression of our country. We must not see others as differ to
us instead we must put and collect each other's differences to form a unity that can help and serve
as our strongest instruments in making our country a progressive one.
