(1) The Van De Graaff Generator is basically an electrostatic machine that can generate high

voltages. The generator uses a moving belt to accumulate an electric charge unto the hollow
metal globe on the top of an insulated column, creating very high electric potentials

 The dome rests on an insulated stand because the stand is a poor conductor that
does not alter the dome. Therefore, the static charge produced cannot move from
where the rubbing occurs.

 Photocopiers
These contain a charged drum when the paper to be copied is laid on the glass plate, the
light reflected from the white parts of the paper causes the charge to disappear from the
corresponding parts of the drum opposite. The charge pattern remaining on the drum
corresponds to the dark-coloured printing on the original. Special toner powder is then
dusted over the drum and sticks to those parts which are still charged. When a sheet of
paper passes over the drum, the particles of toner are attracted to it and fuses into place by
a short burst of heat.

 Process of removing dust (e.g., Operating Theatres)

Static electricity is used in pollution control by applying a static charge to dirt particles in the
air and then collecting those charged particles on a plate or collector of the opposite
electrical charge. Such devices are often called electrostatic precipitators. Dust and germs
are attracted by charged objects and so it is essential to ensure that equipment and medical
personnel are well ‘earthed’ allowing electrons to flow to and from the ground, e.g. by
conducting rubber
