ACADEMIC INTEGRITY PLEDGE

I swear on my honor that I did not use any inappropriate aid, nor give such to others, in accomplishing
this coursework. I understand that cheating and/or plagiarism is a major offense, as stated in TIP
Memorandum No. P-04, s. 2017-2018, and that I will be sanctioned appropriately once I have committed
such acts.

1. What is reinforced concrete?
Reinforced concrete is a combination of concrete and steel wherein the steel reinforcement provides the
tensile strength lacking in the concrete. Reinforced concrete may be the most important material available
for construction: it has considerable compressive strength per unit cost compared with most other
mate rials, it has great resistance to the actions of fire and is the best structural material available for
situations where water is present, it is a low-maintenance material, and it has a very long service life.

2. Design process for reinforced concrete structures

There are three major phases in the design process. To illustrate:

Defining the Development Design of

client's needs of project Individual
and priorities concept Systems

3. Loads used for design of reinforced concrete structures

Dead Loads- These are permanent gravity loads and is also known as self-weight. These are static in
nature or no changes in magnitude or intensity over time.
Live Loads- These are loads that vary depending on time, location, and other factors. These may be
static, dynamic or cyclic in nature.
Vehicle Loads- These are loads due to vehicular weight and/or motion. These may be static or dynamic
in nature.
Wind Loads- forces that act on a structure due to action of wind.
Earthquake Loads- is a 'dynamic load', which means it brings about the vibration of structures.

4. Materials used in reinforced concrete and their properties

Concrete is a mixture of sand, gravel, crushed rock, or other aggregates held together in a rocklike mass
with a paste of cement and water. Sometimes one or more admixtures are added to change certain
characteristics of the concrete such as its workability, durability, and time of hardening. Steel
reinforcement is embedded in concrete to hold the concrete together, prevent large cracks, and add
overall strength. This added strength allows for the creation of longer, thinner, cantilevered structures,
and less-supported slabs that are more structurally sound due to the reinforcement.
