Twitter Audiences

Coursenvy® www.Coursenvy.com
Twitter Audiences

➢ Once an audience is created via Twitter Ads, you can use the Twitter Audience page to view
details about the audience, monitor the audience status, view the Twitter audience size, and
edit/delete audiences.
➢ My first audience I create is my email list of current customers OR a list of @handles on
Twitter I want to target with a Twitter ad.
➢ If you don’t have any email lists or list audiences, that is ok! We can create audiences by
installing the Universal Website Tag on our website which will start tracking users and
building Twitter Audiences.

Twitter Audience → List

Twitter Audience Lists enable you to upload and target lists of specific Twitter users via Twitter
Ads. You can upload lists of:

➢ Email addresses
➢ Mobile Advertising IDs
➢ Twitter @usernames (also called @handles)
➢ Twitter user IDs

Coursenvy® www.Coursenvy.com
For this example,
we will be creating
a List audience
consisting of our
competitors most
engaged users.

List → Competitors Most Engaged Users

➢ A common list I will outsource to be built via

Upwork.com is an @handles list of our
competitors most engaged users. So how do we
find these “engaged users”?

➢ Navigate to your competitors Twitter profile and

click a recent, highly engaged Tweet OR their
profile’s PINNED Tweet.

Coursenvy® www.Coursenvy.com
Build a List of the Highly Engaged

Click on a Tweet of your

competitors.

On the Tweet page you can click

the engagement links below the
Tweet to see the users who
performed each engagement,
such as “Retweets”.

Follow, like, reply, and ENGAGE

with these highly engaged users
so they do they same for your
Twitter content!

Have your outsourced freelancer

build an Excel .CSV file of all
these @handles.

Coursenvy® www.Coursenvy.com
Excel .CSV Format

For Twitter handles:

➢ Do NOT include the @ sign

➢ Make sure the text is lowercase
➢ Delete any spaces before and after the handle/username
➢ We recommend files with at least 2000 @handles to create the best lists for targeting via
Twitter ads
➢ Save the Excel file as a .CSV

Universal Website Tag

Coursenvy® www.Coursenvy.com
Twitter Universal Website Tag

1. Universal Website Tag (recommended) - A universal tag enables you to track all events on
your website by simply adding a snippet of coding to your website. You just need to install
the Universal Website Tag once and define rules based on user behavior.

2. Single Event Website Tag - Single event website tags should only be used if you cannot use
a universal website tag; examples included if you’re placing this tag in an iframe (such as an
embedded YouTube video play button) or for a non-page load event (such as an in-page
submit button that doesn’t direct the user to a new page).

Copy the Twitter universal website tag code in this box and
have your web developer add it to every page of your website
(most easily done with the <header> code).

Once your code is installed, go back to create specific

conversion events that you want to track (i.e. Purchases for
eCommerce websites).

website tag” you just

Coursenvy® www.Coursenvy.com
Next, select the “traffic” that
equates the Event your are
tracking. For example, when a user
submits their email address into
our newsletter lead capture form
on your website, the successful
submission URL is
coursenvy.com/thanks

We we want to track the URL that

contains this “success” URL.

Coursenvy® www.Coursenvy.com
Exact URL vs URL Contains

➢ Selecting "Exact URL" will trigger this conversion event whenever a user visits a page with a
Twitter Universal Website Tag that matches your rules. "Exact URL" matching is case
sensitive and looks to match the URL exactly as given, including URL query string
parameters. URL query string parameters can vary between users and site navigation paths,
therefore it is highly recommended that you only select "Exact URL" matching for specific
use cases.
➢ Selecting "URL contains" will trigger this conversion event whenever a user visits any of
your pages with a Twitter Universal Website Tag that matches your rules. "URL contains" is
case sensitive and checks if the website URL includes the specified text. This is the
recommended method for identifying specific conversion events based on a URL.
➢ Generally, we recommend using "URL contains".

Coursenvy® www.Coursenvy.com
As you can see, we are
tracking the Conversion
Event of “Sign Up”.

The event that is tracked is

any user that gets to the
successful sign up URL:
coursenvy.com/thanks

Finally, choose the time window
for crediting Twitter with
conversions that happen after a
person views or engages with
your Twitter ads. 30 days
post-engagement and 1 day
post-view is our default.

Once complete, click the “Save
