Plasmodium spp.
The NovaLisa® Malaria antibody assay is a fast and sensitive enzyme immunoassay for the
detection of total antibodies against Plasmodium spp. in human serum or plasma.
■ Ready-to-use reagents
■ Recombinants antigens of P. Falciparum and P. vivax
■ P. ovale, P. malariae, and P. knowlesi are also detected due to the antigenic similarity
between the different Plasmodium species
■ Low cross-reactivity to other parasites or vector-borne transmitted viruses
■ Diagnostic Sensitivity: 95.88% ; Diagnostic Specificity: 97.53%
■ CE-IVD marked

About Malaria
Malaria is the most common tropical parasitic disease and is becoming more important in
non-endemic areas due to returning travelers. The transmission of Plasmodium (P. ovale, P.
malariae, P. vivax, P. falciparum, P. knowlesi) occurs by the bite of the Anopheles female
mosquito. P. falciparum and P. vivax are the most common types.
The initial symptoms of infection are nonspecific (headache, fever, chills, dizziness, nausea) and
may persist for several days. Later it presents as periodic fever attacks every 3 to 4 days
depending on the species.
In malaria endemic areas, children between 6 months and 3 years of age are especially at risk,
however adults may develop partial immunity. In non-endemic areas, children and
non-immune adults are also at risk (i.e. tourists from USA and Europe).
