WHAT’S NEW

WHAT’S MORE
1. Water striders can walk on top of water due to a combination of factors. Water striders use the high surface
tension of water and their long, hydrophobic legs to stay afloat.
2. Because water molecules on the ocean's surface are more strongly attracted to one another than air
molecules above them, they form an invisible skin on the water's surface, allowing objects like the needle to
float on top.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

1. The two major factors that affect viscosity are fluid temperature and flow conditions.
2. Water is composed of oxygen and hydrogen and has the ability to create hydrogen bonds, which are
extremely strong intermolecular forces. Water molecules "stick" to one another due to these high
intermolecular interactions, preventing them from transitioning to the gaseous phase.
3. The kinetic energy of a liquid's molecules grows as its temperature rises, and as the kinetic energy of the
molecules rises, the number of molecules transitioning into a vapor rises as well, raising the vapor pressure.

WHAT I CAN DO
1. Because molecules travel quicker when they are heated. Temperature is simply a measure of how fast
molecules move. As a result, water soluble stains will be removed more quickly using hot water.
2. The molecules of other liquids, however, may not be as strongly attracted to one another as water molecules
are, and therefore require less energy to vaporize.
3. Not at all, because there is a lot going on at the molecular level. Evaporation and condensation happen all
the time. The fact that the water level remains constant suggests that evaporation and condensation occur
at the same rate.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
1. The difference between evaporation and boiling is that evaporation occurs only on the liquid's surface,
whereas boiling occurs throughout the entire bulk of the liquid. This is the main difference between
evaporation and boiling.
2. Because water expands when it cools, the liquid in a can of soda will expand when frozen.
