1.Explain why the company has been compared to a cross between Amazon.com, eBay,
and a grandma’s basement.

While Etsy shares the same seller aligned business model with Amazon and eBay, offering
a platform on which anyone can list and sell a product in exchange for commission and
product listing fees, it follows a vertical offering of handcrafted creations and vintage
goods, as opposed to Amazon and eBay that offer a wide catalog of all kinds of products.
On the other hand, the unique and custom nature of the products listed on Etsy is similar to
the genuine products one can find when exploring a family closet, thus the comparison to a
grandma’s basement.

 2. Examine the mission of the company and explain what the company is doing to attain
its mission.

“Our mission is to Keep Commerce Human. People make Etsy possible. We provide a
meaningful space for sellers to turn their creative passions into opportunity. We enable
buyers to discover unique items made with care”
Etsy has maintained a narrow, vertical product offering of only handmade and vintage
products, emphasizing, and maintaining the creative and individualistic nature of the
company.

3. The sellers in this case are mostly small businesses. As such, Etsy is considered a B2C
company. However, it can also be viewed as an enabler of P2P. Explain.

A p2p website connects the consumer with the service/product provider. Etsy’s platform is
developed in a way that connects sellers with (potential) customers, offering customers a
wide variety of products to choose from.
Peer to peer communication is very common at the Etsy platform, with members organizing
events and streaming workshops.
 4. Compare and contrast similar transactions conducted on Etsy and on eBay.

Etsy charges a transaction fee of 6.5 percent of the listing price, shipping and gift wrapping
fees, and 0.20$ per listing, while Ebay charges 12.55 percent of the sale price and 0.30$ per
order.

5. Enter storenvy.com and look at their markets. Compare this site with Etsy. Write a
report.

When entering the site of storenvy.com, customers can find a wider range of product
categories, such as music, health and beauty, tech etc. in which you can find mass products
and standardized products at high prices, as opposed to Etsy, where the categories suggest
that the website offers only accessories and handmade gifts at lower prices.
The user interfaces are similar, both being menu driven. However, Storenvy has an on sale
and trending category which ultimately boosts bigger spending.

6. Investigate the connection between Pinterest and Etsy. Start with Feldmann (2014).
Write a report.
Sellers use Pinterest as a mechanism to promote their products. By connecting their
Pinterest account to the Etsy social media tool, they can directly share their products from
their Shop Manager and organize them in pins in order to attract customers from the
platform.
Etsy has over 4 million on Pinterest, where they have over 100 organized boards filled with
pins of their merchandise. By constantly updating their Pinterest account, they have
become a verified profile with a significant following which ultimately helps them spread
their business to a larger public, attract more customers and suppliers and create brand
awareness.
