PROPERTIES OF FLUIDS

FLUIDS D. SPECIFIC GRAVITY:

- Anything that can flow is FLUID.. - Dimensionless ratio of a fluids/gas density to some standard
- (mapa-liquid or gas man yan) reference density.

DIFFERENT PROPERTIES OF FLUIDS:

A. KINEMATIC PROPERTIES
- talks about mainly velocity, acceleration, etc.

B. THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES
- temperature, density, pressure, specific enthalpy, etc.

C. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
- color and others. Note:
In liquid and solid the standard reference density is water. In gases,
the density of the air.
PROPERTIES OF FLUIDS:
Note:
A. DENSITY: Water properties @ 4 ̊C:
- Defined as the ratio of the mass of the fluid to its
volume.

Units: kg/m3
slugs/ft3
g/cm3

Note:
The density of gases is dependent on pressure and temperature
while density of liquid remains constant.
Note:
If the temperature increases, the specific weight decreases.

@ 20 ̊C:

B. SPECIFIC WEIGHT/ UNIT WEIGHT:

- Defined as the ratio of weight possessed by a unit
volume of a fluid. E. BULK MODULUS OF ELASTICITY:
- Defined as the ratio of the change in unit pressure to the
corresponding volume change per unit volume.

Units: N/m3 or kN/m3

lb/ft3
dyne/cm3
Units: N/m3 = Pascal (Pa)
Note:
The specific weight is dependent on acceleration due to gravity F. COMPRESSIBILITY:
(g) as it changes from place to place . - It is the fractional change in volume of a liquid per unit
change in pressure.

C. SPECIFIC VOLUME:
- Volume that fluid occupies per unit mass. Simply, the
reciprocal of density.
