Introduction

Adam’s quote ,“If your actions inspire other to dream more, learn more, do
more and become more, you are a leader”. The meaning of the leader is a
person, the inspiration and instructor of the accomplishment who persuades
a group of individuals in the direction to get success of a goal. Leaders
have the arrangement of behaviour and leadership skills which formulate
others want to follow his leading. Leadership is one of the most important
roles to achieve the goals in running and association business. I
interviewed the successful leader in management and organization, Carol as
outlet manager in Coffee Club. She describe about her responsibility and
task that is taking care of their outlet development, sales, safeguarding,
organization, customer’s feedback and daily reported to management.
Additionally, she expresses that manager need to look out of their managers
and staffs as well as give the training to new staffs.
2. General
Observation 2.1
Leadership Role Founded on what I have observed about the
leadership role of Carol, she is coach and motivator, team player,
strategic planner and team-builder. She is a coach and motivator because
she manages trains and helps the development of team member and help to
resolve any problem and conflict. She leads problem solving and teamwork.
Moreover, she motivates her staffs with the effective ways by using reward
which is special and effect and efficient words to describe their value to
get higher performance. She is passive team player also she said the most
important thing is team work to lead successful organization. Leader has
talent to obtain the balance accurate between team work and personal
objective. When team member need help, they help each other and contribute
as little as possible. In additional to, she is the team-builder who
suggest that work like a team is the best thing to handle the complex
condition. She is the person who ability to make the team come together to
accomplish more than a group of individuals. She wants to maintain and
provide the team as well as lead from the front. Appreciate and accept
support to be right decision-making and a team will become stronger and our
organization will be successful. By examining that she analyses market with
comparing weakness and strength and consumer’s suggestion and she plan the
effective ways to success her jobs, she is the good strategic planner of
association.
2.2 Leadership Styles According to the Dubrin (2009),
leadership style is combination of attitudes and behaviours. These are
based on the proportions of commence arrangement and deliberation. There
are four leadership styles, Participative leadership, Autocratic
leadership, Entrepreneurial leadership and Leader-ship Grid. Based on
Dubrin’s leadership style, in my view, Carol’s leadership style is
participative. She encourages group members to participate and share
decisions to all members of a team in classify critical goals and improving
the procedures and plans to achieve organization. She believes that group
members think engaged in the process and they are more motivated and
innovative. Her managing ability and strong team building capability are
imperative leadership attributes for successful the goals.
2.3 Leadership
Skills In my opinion, Carol have three noticeable skills which are a
competence to build up relationship among the staffs and customers, an
capability to expand others as influential and talent to construct a
motivating environment. Carol is open-minded, sociable, honest, truthful
and out-going person who you can talk to her on every occasion you have a
problem. She the ability to guide, command, direct, manage, motivate and
influence a team to accomplish her goals and operations and make powerful
them at the same time to reach their purposes. She solved external and
internal conflicts and completed release communication and participative
decision making to inspire group members. She understands how to help in
planning the program and in getting things done and knows how to build
trust and builds confidence among team members.
2.4 Personality Traits
Carol acquires personality traits, motivation and cognitive factors. There
are two personality traits, general and task-related personality traits.
She has self-confidence, enthusiasm, extraversion and trustworthiness as
personality traits. By my observation, I found out passion, courage and
emotional intelligence of her task-related personality traits. Likewise,
she possesses a strong work ethic as leadership motives and creativity as
cognitive factor. She has the ability to make reasonable and logical
decisions through the use of problem resolving and analyzing.
2.5 Values
Many personal characteristics will relate to verify the actions of a person
in a leadership role. They are awareness, attitude, motivation, behaviour,
ability, knowledge, experience, self-assurance, and commitment that are a
few of the variables which are important for understanding the behaviour of
people and value. Values are important as they influence a person's
behaviour to consider the importance of alternatives. Carol is the
effective leader who possesses above mention values. She improves her
values with her ability and all of her staffs know her values in management
and they appreciate Carol’s leadership.
2.6 Behaviours I realized Carol’s
behaviour which is a relationship-oriented behaviours and attitudes because
she works together with her staffs smoothly, she has good communication
with staffs and consumers and she cares all of her staffs as well as she
believes hers and staff’s ability. She builds concert with inspiration,
agreement of the needs of members and the goals to create an organization
that is self-evaluation, self -improvement, self -renewing and continuing.

3. Analysis of Interview I would like to describe about Carol’s real

leadership style, leadership role, skill, traits, values and behaviour by
comparing with my observation and her answers from my interview questions.

3.1 Carol’s real leadership role Based on her answers 4 and others, we can
see about her leadership role that she is good team-builder, motivator,
strategic planner and team player. She played like an effective leader in
many roles. She answered that leader need to lead a team and demonstrate
her capacity as well as she needed to care staff and they built their
relationship with respects. She mentioned about as like team player, leader
and staffs needed to help each other and team work is important part of
achievement in goals. She prompted her staff with effective reward system
and promotion in event and follower her leadership, they got high
performance skill. She contributed her team member’s work when it needed.
She corresponded the scheme to group and adapted it to valuable plan by
sharing decision, measuring performance and clear accountabilities.
According to her real leadership role and my observation about her is not
significantly similar. My perception of her leadership is that she is good
coach too. But she said that she was not good coach and trainer to their
staffs. She could not provide enough guides and could not give sufficient
training to develop their skill.
3.2 Carol’s real leadership style I
classified her leader style as a participative leader. However, when I
realized from her answers that she was not only have participative style,
but also had few characters of supportive and autocratic styles. From
answer 13, she persuaded work with team, she shared her decision with team
members and target to accomplishment their performance as participative
leader. In number two, she stated that the leader should treat staffs
fairly and need to know her staff’s requirement. Depending on her answer,
these were showing that she was a supportive leader. We can classify her
leadership style to autocratic style too. From her answers, her leadership
style considered by person control over all decisions and built selection
based on all members’ ideas and decision. By observation her answers, she
made decisions quickly without discuss with teams when it is immediately
need solution.

3.3 Carol’s real leadership skill In my observation, I had mentioned that

she has three visual leadership skills that are good relationship between
the teams and customers, she know how to create motivating and she can
influent to members. Beside that she had ability to handle the conflict
situation and skill to make right decisions by seeing the question number
seven and eight. She said leader and decision-making are related and it is
part of leader ability. From her number eight answers, we can know that she
was aware how to deal with problem in right way and take actions straight
away. She and her staffs enjoyed working together as like a team in
question number two. She had a capacity to generate a motivating
environment by looking at question number 6. She said that leader stand in
front of them whenever they got trouble and support and motivates them.
They encouraged and led to higher performances.
3.4 Carol’s real
personality traits My opinion on her personality traits of self-confidence
is right and she said she has a confidence of what she was doing by viewing
question number 5 and 11. Moreover, she is a trustworthiness person which
she said honesty-person, truthful, liability and having confident are
important for leader. She was good motivator and she motivated her staffs
to obtain good performance by using efficient techniques. Nonetheless other
observations, extraversion is not correct as well as passion is not match
with her real trait. She has courage as her task- related personality
traits. She answered that good leader work with courage of her confidence
and respects each other. From question number 13, she was assertive and
high acceptance while compare to others as she was challenging a high
performance and analyse external and internal market to reach her targets
and aim to higher accomplishment. She had strong work ethics and creativity
from question number eight. She know what is right and wrong and she could
solve the problem depend on situation and made decisions.
3.5 Carol’s real
leadership values My perception of her value is that she had awareness,
attitude, motivation, ability, experience, self-assurance and commitment.
From analysing some of her answers, she said about good leader’s value and
ethics as well as she was awareness how to deal with problem between staffs
and customers, she had many experience about her job and she could give
examples to her staffs from her right and wrong experience and she had over
100% confident of her ability and value. She had skill to make actual plan
for her business, she had inspiration on her job and she took responsibly
and stood in front of her staffs.
3.6 Carol’s real behaviours Based on her
answers, my perception is right that she had a relationship-oriented
behaviour. She said that she had good relationship with her staffs and they
called her mom. Additionally, she had initiating and consideration
structure leadership behaviour. She treated all staffs well and equal like
her and she made herself to get acceptance from all staffs. She let staffs
know what is expected of them, she maintain the performance standard by
motivating and she said team member need to follow their leaders.
3.7 Do’s
and banned to lead successfully based on her experience She said that
leadership as partnership which there is long term relationship between
leader and members. It is very difficult one person to establish goals and
decision, so leader and staffs share the goals, decision and their
feelings. Leadership is existed as partnership and develop a share vision,
solve problems and share power, goal and target to high performance. Each
person must believe their value and skill and they should respect and
self-respect (Spears & Lawrence, 2002). In hers do opinion, staffs should
follow her leader and this can lead to achieve the organization. The staffs
can express their own ideas and vision to their leader (Armstrong, 2010).
She led successfully in organization and her staffs as like team-builders
make out team’s achievement and let them share their view and goals
(Dubrin, Dalglish and Miller 2006). She plays both roles in management as
like team player and leader. She involve in activities with member
togethers. They help each other and she supports them in any situations
(Parker, 2011). Self- confidence, trustworthiness and honest on her work
also emphasized her one of general personality traits for effective
leadership and express that she is effective leader Another personality
trait, courage and self- awareness help her to get achievement in her work.
I could acknowledge is relationship among staffs is helping her understand
more about her staffs and customer that she could lead them in effective
way (Northous, 2010). The block of open communication leads no motivating
environment where leaders’ efforts to gain followers are unsuccessful. She
makes open communication with her staffs and she motivates them in
different ways. Those are all directing to them active in performance
(Thiagarajan & Parker 1999). I mentioned that she do supportive and
participative leadership style. She considers the needs of the staffs,
viewing involve for their benefit and creating a sociable work environment.
This comprises increasing the follower’s self-esteem and stimulates them.
She discusses with staffs and takes their information into explanation when
she makes decisions and takes in particular actions. This is best way to
approach the effectual business (Pennings, 1986). She does ethical
leadership behaviours that she is honest, trustworthy and reliability in
managing conflict and problem. She respects her staffs and individual. She
knows what is right and wrong and guides them with her own experiences. She
creates pleasant work place (Freeman & Stewart, 2006). She does reward
method to motivate her staffs that is aim to increase performance standard
when they can do well in their work. Thus, she does to express their
ability and value in work (Neck, 2006). From her experience, she said to
avoid negative vision, unconditional subject and conflicts. She points out
not to abuse self-assurance or relates damaging in command.

4. Reflections Leaders cannot be perfect and possess all ability as like

leadership theories. There is more or less different between theory and
real world. In leadership roles, the theory detailed what each role and
leaders need to play in various roles of activities. However, in reality,
leaders would not be able to do the condition and qualify all roles to be
completely expert as they pointed out. For example, Carol is a team builder
she discussed problems and make effective solutions (Dubrin, Dalglish and
Miller 2006). Likewise, participative leadership is defined as the leaders
do not make any decision and all planning, implementation change, problem
solving are organized by both group members and members. Consequently they
take thoughts from members and make changes and decisions. However, I have
observed that some leaders are not allowed members to contribute in very
cautious and main decision making (Ricketts & Ricketts, 2010). I have
learned about the motivation and leadership that can lead to successful
communication with members and can increase the accomplishment standard.
Extrinsic factors, maintenance and intrinsic factors, motivator are
effective theories. They motivate employee with extrinsic factors by paying
salary, job safety, title, benefits and working environment and intrinsic
factors by giving rewards depend on their performance what they can do and
do well or not and punishment systems. In these current days, most of the
leaders are using reward and promotion system to approve staff’s
achievement as the same way in theory (Lussier & Achua, 2009). Although I
studied the theories and concepts leadership and management, it is only in
theories and I have no experiment in real world management. After this
research report, I am aware of the leader meanings and roles and management
more intensely and detail. For example, the handle of conflict or
disagreement is taking actions, making best decision and solution. If there
is no solution, make temporary solution. However, avoiding the conflict is
best and more useful in organization and reduces the damages (Daft & Lane,
2007). I understand that participative leadership style can get stronger
power and more effective because leaders are working together with members,
sharing goals, decisions and ideas. On the other hand, leader need to
honest, reliability and responsibility with individual (Robbins 2004). As
well as my understanding is improve the learning of followership because
great followers can lead the management successful and followers are also
important in leadership. After comparing and analysing Carol’s leadership
skill, role, style, value, trait and behaviour and Leadership theories, I
have found how the great leader effective behaviour and styles are, what is
the characters of great leader and how members response to good leader.
Above this research lead to improving of my leadership applies in theories
and learning. I was aware of running the organization, making decision,
ways to handle conflict, treat all member fairly, self-confident, support
the team members and protect them, honest and emotional intelligent. I am
sure that research experiment will help me in leadership and management in
future.
